Part 2 I Started With a Library Card

I grew up the oldest of three brothers.

I didn't always lead by example.

I found children's books later than most people do.

I started with a library card.

No free books. No paid reviews.

Just reading because it felt right.

Somewhere along the way the books started coming in.

Then the bookstores.

Then the travel.

Then New York.

I still get nervous.

I still just keep reading.

Follow your book dream whatever it looks like.

You never know where it'll take you

... Read moreStarting with just a library card is such a relatable beginning for many book lovers, myself included. I remember that quiet anticipation of pulling a book off the shelf, not knowing what adventures lay ahead within its pages. The best part about reading for me has always been that it’s free of pressure — no paid reviews, no expectations, just the pure joy of getting lost in a story. What really resonates with this journey is the courage it takes to turn a simple passion into something bigger, like moving to New York to immerse yourself in the world of books. It’s inspiring to see how bookstores became more than just places to buy books; they turned into vibrant hubs of community and creativity. From attending events to meeting authors and illustrators, every step brings you closer to living your dream. I’ve also found that the nervousness that comes with stepping into new worlds or spaces — like the author did at their first event at Bank Street College — is a universal feeling. Yet, it’s that very feeling that signals growth and new opportunities. Whether you’re a writer, illustrator, or passionate reader, following your book dream, no matter how unconventional, is what leads to unexpected and wonderful places. It’s lovely to see hashtags like #bookrecommendations and #purposedriven highlighting how sharing our personal journeys with books can inspire and connect us all. Also, experiences at iconic locations such as Midtown Manhattan add a special layer to these stories, blending the magic of the literary world with real-life moments. For anyone hesitant to start their own reading adventure or creative journey, remember: the path from a simple library card to a world of possibilities is always worth it. Keep reading, keep dreaming, and trust where your love for books takes you.
