relatively low maintenance, the begonia maculata is an incredible specimen. so incredible, it was the inspiration for a very iconic shoe 👠

the key to the success of begonias is light & humidity. if you live in a drier home/environment, consider investing in a humidifier to really help her thrive.

living in the very dry southern california, it has been work to keep my begonias happy! but so worth it for the beauty 😍

... Read moreThe Polka Dot Begonia, or Begonia maculata, is renowned for its stunning spotted leaves and unique care needs. To ensure your plant flourishes, it’s vital to provide bright, indirect light; this will mimic its natural tropical habitat. Watering is also critical—keep the soil consistently damp but never soaked, as overwatering can lead to root rot. It only requires fertilizer about once a month during its growing season, which contributes to its lushness. Humidity levels are another key factor for success with begonias as they thrive in environments reminiscent of their native tropical climates, ideally needing humidity levels over 50%. If your home is drier, consider using a humidifier or a pebble tray to boost moisture around the plant. Temperature plays a significant role too. Generally, temperatures between 67-70°F (18-22°C) are ideal. Above all, always be cautious as some parts of begonias can be mildly toxic if ingested, so keep them out of reach of pets and small children. Did you know that the Polka Dot Begonia has inspired iconic designs, including Louboutin’s famous red-bottomed shoes? Their cultural significance only adds to their allure as indoor plants. With the right care, your Polka Dot Begonia can transform your living space into a vibrant oasis.
