... Read moreStarting a gardening journey can be incredibly rewarding, and Anderson’s story is a perfect example of how anyone can cultivate their green space over time. Beginning with something as simple as microgreens, you don’t need a large backyard or fancy equipment to get started. Microgreens, known for their fast growth and nutritious qualities, are an excellent entry point. They require minimal space and can thrive on a sunny windowsill, making them ideal for urban dwellers. As her journey evolved, Anderson embraced native and desert plants upon moving to California. Native plants are fantastic for local ecosystems—they often require less water and care, attract pollinators, and are resilient in their natural environment. Upcycling garden materials during this phase is another smart approach, promoting sustainability by reusing items for planters and garden structures. Community gardens offer a wonderful way to expand your gardening horizons, learn from fellow gardeners, and grow diverse crops like root vegetables and flowers. These spaces foster collaboration and knowledge sharing, which can accelerate your gardening skills. Anderson’s move into the "houseplant glow-up era" represents many gardeners' love for indoor plants. Plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplants can be grown indoors or in small outdoor containers, allowing gardeners to savor fresh produce year-round. The later focus on variegated and exotic houseplants showcases a deepened passion and dexterity in plant care, such as mastering propagation techniques—cloning plants from cuttings—and strategic garden planning. By year eight, Anderson had progressed to fruit trees, potatoes, home harvesting, and composting. Composting is a fantastic step for any gardener wanting to reduce waste and create nutrient-rich soil that promotes healthy plant growth. Sharing plant hacks and garden magic creates a supportive community atmosphere that encourages others to start where they are, just as Anderson did. For those new to gardening or looking to elevate their skills, starting small is key. Pick a few seeds or a favorite plant, learn basic care routines, and gradually build your garden’s complexity. Embrace failures as learning opportunities, and don’t hesitate to engage with gardening communities—online or local—to exchange tips and inspiration. Anderson’s experience is a reminder that gardening is not just about plants, but also about personal growth, mindfulness, and connection with nature. Whether you live in a city apartment or a suburban home, there’s always room to grow, literally and figuratively, through gardening.

so beautiful! I live in the NE in a big city and have very little room to garden. I'm actually trying garlic for the first time. When I'm successful and the squirrels aren't chewing down, I grow tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and herbs. I want to try red beets and zucchini this spring. you are inspiring me!🥰
