Sun protection matters!

Not just to avoid sunburns on pale skin but also thinking of skin cancer and any future skin conditions… moms will think I’m just strict about modesty but it has nothing to do with that AT ALL. It’s all about health and wellbeing—- now and in the long run.

I encourage my little one to always pick out her own clothes and express herself as long as they are practical choices for the occasion. That means sun protection for a pool day, athletic shoes for a walking and shopping day, etc.

One summer, I realized I was the only one at the pool wearing a hat and an SPF shirt, mimicking the photo where the child is noted as "THE ONLY ONE IN A HAT AND SPF SHIRT AT THE POOL BUT IT'S WORTH IT!" This moment made me appreciate the significance of being proactive, even if it means standing out. Encouraging children to pick their own clothes is a wonderful way to foster self-expression, but guiding them towards practical options like sun-protective garments, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking swimwear can make all the difference. Brands like Cat & Jack offer stylish and effective sun-safe clothing that appeals to kids and makes the protection process seamless. Additionally, sun protection isn’t just about clothes. Applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on exposed skin is critical, especially on areas like the face, neck, and hands. Reapplication every two hours or after swimming ensures continuous defense. Don’t forget sunglasses with UV protection for sensitive eyes. These habits instilled early can greatly reduce the risk of skin damage, sunburns, premature aging, and skin cancer later in life. Teaching and modeling sun-safe behaviors also empowers children to take their health seriously. As a mom balancing modesty and the need for protection, I’ve found that prioritizing health and well-being while allowing my child’s personality to shine through is the best approach. Ultimately, sun protection is a vital and non-negotiable part of caring for young, delicate skin.
