Read Across America Day is always a special time to encourage a lifelong love of reading. Last week’s celebration gave us so many wonderful moments to share stories, enjoy books, and create memorable literacy experiences for kids of all ages. One of the key aspects of my experience during Read Across America was witnessing how interactive activities can spark enthusiasm. We used a variety of playful methods, like storytelling sessions where children could dress up as their favorite characters or participate in simple crafts related to the books. For example, we created themed bookmarks and painted pictures to match stories, facilitating a hands-on connection with reading. Another important element was the sense of community involvement. Parents, teachers, and volunteers all played active roles, showing children that reading is valued beyond the classroom. This kind of support is crucial because children are more motivated to read when they see it as a shared family and community activity. Also, encouraging conversations about books opened doors for kids to express their thoughts and imaginations. Asking open-ended questions like 'What would you do if you were this character?' or 'Can you think of a different ending?' helped deepen comprehension and critical thinking skills. While celebrating, we also emphasized inclusivity in the selection of books. Including diverse stories helped children see themselves reflected in the pages or learn about different experiences and cultures, fostering empathy and understanding. From my personal perspective, combining education with enjoyment is the best way to promote literacy. The energy and smiles of the children during our Read Across America events showed me how a campaign like this can create lasting positive associations with reading and learning that will hopefully continue throughout their lives.
