study tip of the day! 📖

✨ STOTD: active recall/blurting on a whiteboard!

You basically write down everything you can remember on a topic on the whiteboard without referring back to textbooks, notes, etc. This helps you assess what you know, and what you need to work on. The whiteboard is simply a tool you can use for the active recall/blurting, while also helping visual learners.

... Read moreHey study buddies! 👋 I wanted to dive a little deeper into my favorite study technique, active recall, because it's been an absolute game-changer for my grades and understanding. While my initial post touched on using a whiteboard, let's explore how you can truly maximize this method, whether you're a whiteboard warrior or a notebook enthusiast, and make those study streaks count! Deep Dive into the Whiteboard Method: The whiteboard method for active recall, often called 'blurting,' is fantastic for visual learners and anyone who needs to see the big picture. Here’s how I tackle it: Clear Your Space: First, make sure your study desk is organized, but put away all notes and textbooks related to the topic you're about to recall. You want a clean slate – literally! Grab your markers and find a comfortable spot in front of your whiteboard. Pick Your Topic: Choose one specific concept, chapter, or lecture you want to test yourself on. For example, if I just finished a chemistry lecture, I might pick 'Chemical Equilibrium.' Start Blurtin' It Out: Without looking at any handwritten notes or other study materials, write down everything you can remember about that topic. Think keywords, definitions, formulas, diagrams – anything that comes to mind. Don't worry about neatness at this stage; the goal is to extract information from your brain. I often find myself drawing little flowcharts or mind maps on the whiteboard, which really helps connect ideas. Check and Fill Gaps: Once you've exhausted your memory, grab your notes or textbook. Compare what you wrote on the whiteboard with the correct information. Use a different colored marker to fill in any missing details, correct mistakes, or add clarity. This is where the learning truly happens – identifying your knowledge gaps is key! Re-explain to Yourself: Sometimes, I'll even pretend to teach the topic to an imaginary student using my whiteboard. Explaining it out loud helps solidify the concepts. Active Recall with a Notebook: Your Portable Powerhouse! What if you don't have a whiteboard, or you're studying on the go? No problem! The active recall method works just as effectively with a simple notebook and pen. This is perfect for quiet library sessions or when you're just reviewing concepts at your desk amongst your other study materials. Dedicated Pages: I like to dedicate a separate section or a fresh page in my notebook for blurting. This keeps my actual study notes clean. Similar to the whiteboard, put away your main study materials. Write Everything Down (Analog Style): Just like with the whiteboard, pick a topic and start writing down everything you recall. Don't censor yourself or worry about making it perfect. If I'm studying a language, for instance, I'll try to write down all the Japanese characters I remember for a certain vocabulary set, along with their meanings and example sentences. For subjects like math or physics, I'll write down formulas and try to work through a practice problem from memory, or quickly sketch out a concept like I would for a chemistry practice exam. Highlight Gaps: Once you've blurted everything out, open your textbook or notes. Use a different colored pen or a highlighter to mark what you missed or got wrong. I find physically writing down the correct information next to my mistakes helps reinforce the learning. Summarize and Synthesize: After reviewing, try to summarize the entire topic in a few bullet points at the bottom of your blurting page. This forces you to synthesize the information clearly. Making Active Recall a Habit for Study Streaks: To truly benefit, consistency is key. Try to incorporate active recall into your daily or weekly study routine. Even short, focused blurting sessions of 10-15 minutes can make a huge difference. By regularly testing yourself and identifying what you don't know, you're building those strong neural pathways and ensuring you’re actually learning the material, not just passively rereading it. Good luck, you've got this!
