things i hate about dorm life

Dorm life isn't actually all that bad most of the time, but there are definitely things i really really hate about it....

1. Communal Bathrooms - No privacy, some people are just gross and leave the space so icky and messy

2. Competing to do laundry - my dorm is 4 floors and we only have 4 washers/dryers... I sometimes have to go to another dorm to do my laundry

3. Lack of temperature control - The heater is always on FULL BLAST. which isn't a problem during winter but on days where the outside temperature isn't too bad it's steaming inside

... Read moreDorm life definitely comes with its own unique set of quirks and challenges, and while there are plenty of good times, some things can really get under your skin! Beyond the frustrations you've already mentioned, I've found a few strategies that have helped me navigate these common hurdles, especially when it comes to those communal spaces and unpredictable room temperatures. I totally get the communal bathroom struggle! It's not just about privacy, but sometimes just finding a clean spot. My best advice? Invest in a really good shower caddy. Having everything neatly organized means less fumbling around, and definitely always wear shower shoes – no exceptions! I've also learned to figure out the peak and off-peak times. Early mornings or late nights often mean less traffic and a cleaner space. And honestly, a quick wipe down of your own shower area after you're done, if it's looking a bit messy, can make a huge difference for the next person and keep things generally tidier. The laundry room situation is real! Four washers for four floors is a nightmare I know all too well. I used to haul my stuff to another building too! What’s helped me is checking if your dorm has a laundry app – some do, and it shows machine availability. If not, try going during class hours or late at night. Weekends are usually the worst. I also try to do smaller loads more frequently to avoid a huge pile-up, which makes the whole process less daunting. Quick-dry items are a lifesaver, and if you can, learn to hand wash smaller things like socks or delicates in your room to save machine time. Oh, the dreaded dorm heater on full blast! I swear, my room goes from freezing to tropical in minutes. Since you can't control the thermostat directly, you have to get creative with your temperature settings. My first go-to was a good quality desk fan – it doesn't cool the whole room but provides a personal breeze. Keeping your blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day can also help block some heat. For sleeping, lightweight, breathable bedding is a must. And yes, for those really hot nights, I've heard amazing things about cooling weighted blankets or even just a simple cooling mattress pad. They're designed to draw heat away from your body, which sounds like a dream when your dorm feels like a sauna. Staying hydrated and wearing light, breathable clothes, even to sleep, also makes a big difference. It’s all about finding those little hacks to make your space comfortable. Beyond these, one thing I wasn't prepared for was the constant noise and general lack of personal space. Dorms are bustling environments, and sometimes you just need quiet. Noise-canceling headphones became my best friend for studying or just unwinding. I also set up a small, cozy corner in my room, making it feel like 'my' sanctuary where I could retreat. It’s amazing what a comfy beanbag or a string of fairy lights can do to personalize a tiny space and make it feel more like home, even amidst the chaos. Dorm life definitely has its challenges, but it's also a unique experience. Learning to adapt and find little solutions for these everyday nuisances makes it much more manageable. Talking to your RA about persistent issues, like a constantly overheated room or chronically messy communal areas, can sometimes help too. It's all part of the college journey, and honestly, you learn a lot about problem-solving!
