... Read moreHey everyone! 👋 You know that feeling when you have a vision for a space, but actually getting started feels impossible? That was me with my old china hutch. For ages, I dreamed of having a dedicated coffee bar, and this beautiful piece of furniture, a family heirloom from my mother-in-law, was just begging for a new life. And let me tell you, transforming it into a coffee hutch was one of the most rewarding DIY projects I've ever tackled!
If you're thinking about creating your own china cabinet coffee bar, let me share a few extra tips from my experience. First off, don't be intimidated! Like me, you might doubt yourself, but it's totally achievable. The process of taking something old and making it perfectly functional and stylish for your home is incredibly satisfying. My first step, after emptying it out, was to carefully disassemble the hutch into its main sections. This made it so much easier to work on each piece individually, especially for sanding and painting.
Prepping is truly key to a professional-looking finish. Even though I was eager to get to the fun part, I made sure to clean every surface thoroughly and do a light sanding. This helps the paint adhere much better and gives you a smooth canvas. Choosing the right color was a big decision for me. As you saw, I went with a gorgeous matte blue, which really elevated the piece and tied it into the color scheme I'm working on for our home. Don't be afraid to grab a couple of paint swatches, like I did, and see how they look in your space throughout the day. The 'Winter Way' shade I considered was beautiful, but ultimately, the darker matte blue just spoke to me for the coffee hutch. Using a good quality primer before your chosen paint color can also make a huge difference in coverage and durability.
Now, for the 'coffee bar' part! Think about what you need. For me, adding interior lighting was an absolute must. It makes such a difference, not only for aesthetics but also for quickly finding what you need in the morning. Consider where your coffee maker will sit and if you need any additional shelving or hooks for mugs. I loved the idea of incorporating a shiplap-style backing into the design, which really makes the inside pop and adds to that farmhouse charm, even with a modern matte blue exterior. It’s all about making it practical for your daily coffee ritual.
This project truly was inexpensive, especially since the hutch itself was free. My biggest costs were paint, brushes, and the LED strip lights. Take your time, work on it in stages if you need to, and most importantly, enjoy the process! Every time I walk past my beautiful, fully stocked dark blue coffee hutch now, I feel a huge sense of accomplishment. You absolutely can do it too! Happy DIYing! ✨
You did a great job love it 😊
