MOVING OUT after my graduation!!

Hello Lemon8 people!

I haven’t posted in so long, life got real for a while (it’s not over yet). I am currently preparing applications for a postgraduate program in my profession. I will be graduating in May, and I have a few cities in mind. I currently live near DC and I love the city vibes and the proximity to lots of things to do. I have listed the potential cities I could end up going to, and of those, I have only been to Atlanta (which I really liked), so I rely on other people’s opinions and reviews about these places.

If you live or lived in any of these cities, please leave me a comment with the goods and bads about that place! Your comments are appreciated 😊

... Read moreMoving out of state as a recent grad is such a huge step! I'm currently navigating choices for my postgraduate studies, and the idea of making a fresh start in a new city, especially somewhere vibrant like San Diego, is both exciting and a little daunting. I've been doing a lot of research, and it really comes down to making all the right 'arrangements' to ensure a smooth transition. For anyone else who’s been through this, or is considering it, I’d love to hear your insights! One of the first 'arrangements' on my mind is finding a place to live. San Diego, CA, is known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant culture, but that often comes with a higher cost of living compared to some other cities like Savannah, GA, or Greenville, NC. For a recent grad, budgeting is key. I've heard that looking for roommates is often the best way to manage rent, especially in popular neighborhoods. Places like Pacific Beach or North Park might be lively, but areas further inland or slightly outside the main hubs could offer more affordable options. Unlike sprawling Los Angeles, CA, San Diego feels a bit more concentrated, so commute times for studies or work are also a big consideration. What are your favorite neighborhoods for young professionals or grad students? Beyond housing, I'm thinking about how to 'arrange' my professional life. As a young professional, building a network is crucial, especially when you're MOVING OUT OF STATE *AS A RECENT GRAD*. San Diego has growing tech and biotech industries, and with research institutions in La Jolla, CA, there are definitely opportunities. Attending local meetups, university alumni events, and even just joining interest-based groups can be great ways to connect with people who might open doors. It's not just about job hunting; it's about finding mentors and building a community. How did you kickstart your career connections when moving to a new city? Making social 'arrangements' in a new city can sometimes be the hardest part after leaving your college bubble. I'm hoping to find communities that share my interests, whether it's hiking, beach activities, or exploring the food scene. Compared to a city like Charlotte, NC, or even my current area near DC, San Diego has a very distinct outdoor-driven lifestyle. I'm eager to hear how others have successfully built their social circles in new cities, especially while balancing post-grad studies. It’s all about finding those initial connections and then letting them grow naturally. Finally, the financial 'arrangements'. Moving out of state as a recent grad means being super mindful of every penny. Beyond rent, there's student loan repayment, utilities, groceries, and, of course, a budget for fun! Learning about public transport options versus the cost of owning a car in San Diego, or even finding the best spots for affordable eats, are all part of making smart financial arrangements. It truly feels like I need a full 'Advice Needed!' guide just for budgeting in a new state! For anyone who’s made the leap to Denver, CO, or other major US cities, what were your biggest financial takeaways?
