My parents are with my sister helping them out with Madison! My mom sent me this pic, she looks like she’s having a blast and I can’t wait to see her.

That picture of her in her activity center, surrounded by colorful toys, just laughing away, reminds me of all the pure joy these tiny humans bring into our lives. When you're eagerly awaiting a visit with your niece, or just spending time with her, you want to make every moment count. So, what are some of the best ways to really engage and play with your niece, especially when she's still a happy baby finding her way in the world? One of my favorite things to do is focus on sensory play. Babies, like Madison in her activity center, are constantly discovering new things. Bright, colorful toys that make gentle sounds are always a hit. Think about soft rattles, crinkly books, or even simple stacking cups. When she's in her blue activity center, you can point out the different toys, describe their colors, and make sounds for each one. Even if she can't talk back, she's soaking it all in! I love watching their little eyes light up as they explore. Beyond just the toys, interaction is key. Babies adore faces and voices. Making silly expressions, singing nursery rhymes (even if you're off-key!), and just talking to her about what she's doing are wonderful ways to bond. You mentioned she was 'laughing and looking to the side' – those are precious moments that show she's engaged and happy. Respond to her giggles, mimic her coos, and just have a conversation, even if it's one-sided for now. Peek-a-boo is a timeless classic for a reason; it never fails to get a smile! Movement also plays a big role. Gentle bounces, swaying her in your arms, or even just helping her reach for a toy she’s spotted can be fantastic. Tummy time, under supervision, is so important for development, and you can make it fun by placing interesting toys just out of reach. Seeing her try to grab them and then 'having a blast' when she succeeds is so rewarding. As she grows a little, you can introduce more structured, but still simple, play. Building a tower with soft blocks and letting her knock it over is always a hit. Reading board books together, pointing at pictures and making animal sounds, creates a cozy and educational bonding experience. Even just crawling around on the floor with her, exploring the room from her perspective, can feel like a grand adventure. The most important thing to remember when playing with your niece is simply to be present and enjoy the moment. Whether she's contentedly playing in her activity center, surrounded by colorful toys, or you're sharing a quiet moment with a book, these interactions build a strong, loving connection. It's not about elaborate plans or expensive toys; it's about sharing joy, sparking curiosity, and creating those beautiful, happy baby memories that will last a lifetime. Every giggle and every discovery shared with your niece is a treasure, and seeing her 'having a blast' is truly the best reward.
