A Rainbow Waterfall + Historic Mining Town!

If you need the perfect day trip from Salt Lake City Utah then I’ve got you covered!

An hour and a half away from Salt Lake is one of the most beautiful frozen waterfalls that you will ever come across, and you don’t even have to hike to get there!

Ford Creek Water Fall is just right off the side of the road, and for some reason this beautiful frozen waterfall is rainbow right now!

It truly makes this one of the most unique things that you can say that you have seen.

⚠️ Please be careful of the passing cars while walking and very slippery ice once you are at the waterfall⚠️

Then just 10 minutes down the road you have Helper which is the cutest historic mining town that you will ever come across.

Helper has a free museum (accepts donations) that tells all about its rich history and even how one of the towns hotels are supposedly haunted!

You can also just stroll down main street and see so much history that has been left for everyone to see.

Putting these two places together was such a fun experience and I highly suggest that everyone takes a trip to see them!

... Read moreWhen I was planning my latest Utah adventure, I was searching for something truly unique, and that's when I discovered the incredible Ford Creek Waterfall. This isn't just any waterfall; it's a vibrant frozen spectacle, often called a 'Rainbow Waterfall,' and let me tell you, seeing those blue, red, and green streaks against the ice is absolutely mesmerizing! What makes it even better is how accessible it is: located about 1.5 hours from Salt Lake City, it's right off the side of the road, meaning no strenuous hiking is required. It's also completely free to visit, making it a perfect budget-friendly stop for a perfect day trip in Utah. Now, about those colors – many visitors, including myself, wonder how a frozen waterfall gets such vivid hues. While nature can create amazing mineral stains, the unusual rainbow appearance here is often attributed to local artistry, sometimes involving paint, which adds to its whimsical charm and uniqueness. It’s certainly a sight you won't forget! Just a friendly reminder, as I learned during my visit, the area around the base can be very slippery due to ice, so sturdy, waterproof shoes with good grip are a must. Also, keep an eye out for passing cars since you're right by the road. After soaking in the magic of the waterfall, my journey continued just 10 minutes down the road to Helper, Utah. This historic mining town is a delightful step back in time. I loved strolling down Main Street, where every building seems to tell a story. You can spot fascinating details like a large vintage Coca-Cola mural and even old Sinclair gasoline pumps, which really add to the nostalgic atmosphere. The Helper Museum is a must-visit; it's free (though donations are appreciated!) and offers a deep dive into the town's rich coal mining history. I found the exhibits incredibly informative, illustrating the lives of the early settlers and miners. And for those who love a good ghost story, don't miss hearing about the supposedly haunted hotel in town – it adds a fun, spooky twist to the history! Combining the Ford Creek Waterfall with a visit to Helper truly creates an ideal day trip from Salt Lake City. It's a fantastic way to experience both natural (or semi-natural!) beauty and fascinating Utah history in one easy, unforgettable outing. I highly recommend packing a lunch to enjoy at a scenic spot, bringing your camera for those vibrant waterfall shots, and allowing plenty of time to explore the charm of Helper. It’s definitely a hidden gem for anyone looking for local finds and unique things to do in Utah.
