Flying SOLO with a >1 year old ✈️

Okay so I’m actually terrified. I have to fly with my (will be) 8 month old soon and he wants to GO everywhere. He absolutely cannot and will not hang out on the AIRPORT floor so I have to hold him the entire time. Almost 7-8 hours just in the airport. He won’t sleep in my arms usually and usually takes ALL his naps in his crib.

He is learning to crawl and is NOT happy being restrained for even a little bit let alone that long in the airport and on planes. I don’t mind being “that person” with a crying baby on a plane- babies are people too and have a right to be in public. That being said if anyone has any tips to make things a little easier for us on this trip that would be amazing 😂😭

... Read moreFlying solo with a baby who is on the move can feel overwhelming, especially when facing long airport stays and multiple layovers. Given your little one is learning to crawl and prefers not to be on the airport floor, holding him constantly can understandably get tiring. One practical way to ease this is by carrying a lightweight, soft baby carrier or sling, which allows you to keep your baby close but frees up your hands for other tasks and helps soothe him with gentle motion. Since your baby usually naps in his crib but finds it hard to nap in your arms, replicating a familiar sleep environment on the go can help. Bringing his favorite blanket or a small portable white noise machine can create a soothing atmosphere. Also, timing your travel around his usual nap schedule might encourage him to sleep during the flight or while waiting in the airport. Toys are a great distraction—those mentioned like crinkly balls, rattles, teether mitts, and pull toys are excellent choices because they engage your baby’s senses and curiosity. Rotating toys to maintain his interest and packing items with different textures can help keep him entertained longer. When it comes to feeding, ensuring you have enough bottles, formula, and snacks on hand supports comfort and distraction. Feeding during takeoff and landing can also help ease ear pressure, which is often uncomfortable for little ones. Dressing your baby in comfortable, warm clothes layered appropriately for the changing temperatures in airports and airplanes is essential. Since you have multiple layovers, planning diaper changes and wipes accessibly will save you time and reduce stress. Above all, remember it’s okay for your baby to make noise—passengers understand. Prepare yourself emotionally, stay calm, and take breaks when possible. Joining online communities or reading blogs about traveling with babies can offer additional tailored advice and emotional support as you embark on your trip.
