0-4 MONTH MILESTONES

Watching my baby grow these past 4 months has been absolutely incredible.

Of course, there’s a wide range of emotions —

» I’m sad that time moves so quickly and my newborn isn’t so new anymore

» I’m in awe of how we are designed to grow and change

» I’m excited to see my boy enter into new stages where he is more alert and interactive

» I even miss when he was all swished up inside my belly

All that to say, growing babies are amazing and here are some sweet milestones you have to look forward to in the first 4 months!

While it's easy to get caught up in comparing your little one to others, I quickly learned to celebrate every unique step in their journey. My little guy's first four months flew by, and I found myself constantly looking up 'what should my baby be doing now?' Let's talk about some of the amazing milestones you can look forward to, especially focusing on those big physical developments like head control, pushing up, and even those exciting first rolls! Building Head Control: The Foundation of Movement (Weeks 1-16) One of the earliest and most vital milestones is developing head control. In the first few weeks (Weeks 1-4), you might notice your baby briefly lifting their head during tummy time, often while lying on your chest. It’s more of a reflex at this stage. As they approach weeks 4-8, their neck muscles strengthen, allowing for better head control. They'll start to hold their head up more steadily, especially when you're carrying them upright. By weeks 8-12, my baby was lifting his chest higher during tummy time, using his forearms for support, and by weeks 12-16, he was holding his head quite steady, even in supported sitting positions. *My Tip for Head Control:* Tummy time is your best friend! Start with short, frequent sessions on your chest (often called 'skin-to-skin tummy time') or across your lap. Gradually move to a playmat. Place high-contrast toys just out of reach to encourage them to lift and turn their head. Remember, even a minute or two several times a day adds up! Tummy Time & Pushing Up: Strengthening for Exploration (Weeks 4-12) Closely linked to head control is the ability to push up. Around two months (weeks 4-8), babies often start pushing up on their forearms during tummy time, lifting their head and chest slightly. This is incredible for building core strength! As they near three to four months (weeks 8-16), you'll see them pushing up higher on their arms, sometimes even reaching for toys. This action helps strengthen their shoulders and prepares them for rolling. It was so exciting to see his little arms working hard! *My Tip for Pushing Up:* Make tummy time fun! Get down on the floor with your baby, make eye contact, and talk to them. Use a rolled-up towel under their chest for support if they're struggling. Offer crinkly toys or unbreakable mirrors to keep them engaged. The more they enjoy it, the longer they'll tolerate it. The Big Roll: From Tummy to Back (Weeks 12-16) One of the most anticipated milestones around four months is rolling from tummy to back. My little one started showing signs of this around 14 weeks. He’d rock from side to side during tummy time and occasionally flop over! This milestone often happens when they are reaching for a toy and accidentally shift their weight, or it can happen during tummy time when they're tired. It signifies increasing body awareness and muscle control. Remember, rolling from back to tummy usually comes a bit later. *My Tip for Rolling:* Provide plenty of floor time! Give your baby space to move and explore. Place toys slightly to their side, encouraging them to reach and shift their weight. Always supervise them during this active phase, especially in higher places. Beyond the Physical: Social & Cognitive Growth While the physical milestones are often the most noticeable, don't forget the incredible social and cognitive leaps! From recognizing familiar voices and faces (which often starts around weeks 1-4 and becomes clearer by weeks 12-16), to those first social smiles (weeks 4-8), cooing, laughing, and even babbling (weeks 8-12), your baby is soaking up the world. These interactions are just as important as the physical ones. *My Tip for Social Milestones:* Talk, talk, talk to your baby! Respond to their coos and babbles, read books, sing songs, and make lots of eye contact. These simple interactions build their communication skills and strengthen your bond. Every baby develops at their own pace, and that's perfectly normal. Focus on providing a safe, stimulating environment and celebrating each little victory. If you have any concerns about your baby's development, always consult with your pediatrician. Enjoy every precious moment; they truly grow up in a blink!
