... Read moreOh my goodness, if you're looking for the ultimate San Diego beach experience, you absolutely have to check out Fiesta Island for a bonfire! I recently went with friends, and it was pure magic. We got there just as the bright, golden sun was starting to dip, casting incredible hues across the sky and reflecting beautifully on the calm water. It’s truly one of the best spots to catch a sunset while getting cozy around a fire.
First things first, securing one of those coveted fire pits can be a bit of a strategic mission, especially on a weekend or during peak season. My number one tip? Get there early! Like, earlier than you think you need to be. We usually aim for late afternoon, around 3-4 PM, to claim a spot. They're first-come, first-served, and you don't want to be scrambling for a fire pit once you've lugged all your supplies over. Parking can also be a bit of a hunt, so give yourself extra time to find a good spot, especially near the popular fire pit areas. There are several parking lots scattered around the island, so don't be afraid to drive around a bit until you find a suitable space.
Once you’ve snagged your perfect spot along the dark shoreline, it’s time to set up. What to bring? Definitely bring plenty of firewood – enough for a good few hours. I usually grab a bundle or two from a local grocery store or gas station on the way. Don’t forget kindling and a reliable lighter or matches! For the ultimate bonfire experience, you must have s'mores supplies. Graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate are non-negotiables in my book. We also pack some cozy blankets, camp chairs, and a cooler full of drinks and snacks. Trust me, you'll want to linger.
While waiting for the fire to really get going, or just before the sun completely sets, it’s a wonderful place for a stroll. The calm waters of Mission Bay are perfect for a quiet walk along the shore, or if you're feeling energetic, you could even toss a frisbee around. There's plenty of open space, making it family-friendly and great for letting kids (or pets!) run around before settling down for the evening. Enjoying the view as the "bright, golden sun" dips below the horizon, painting the sky with fiery colors, is an experience in itself, even before your own fire is roaring.
When the fire gets going, and that incredible sunset unfolds, there’s nothing quite like it. The warmth of the flames, the sound of the crackling wood, and the gentle lapping of the calm water make for such a relaxing vibe. We love just chilling, roasting marshmallows, telling stories, and soaking in the atmosphere. Sometimes we even bring a portable speaker for some background music, but just listening to the ocean is often enough.
A friendly reminder: always be mindful of the rules and leave no trace! Make sure your fire is completely out before you leave – dousing it with water is essential. And please, pack out everything you pack in. Let's keep Fiesta Island beautiful for everyone to enjoy these amazing bonfire nights. It’s a truly unforgettable San Diego tradition that I cherish, and I hope you get to experience the joy of a Fiesta Island bonfire soon!
