Compliments give me the ick... am I broken lolll

2025/12/3 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so I thought I was alone in this, but does anyone else get that weird, squirmy 'ick' feeling when someone compliments them? Like, 'When someone compliments me,' my brain just short-circuits, and I don't know what to do! It's not that I don't appreciate the kind words, but sometimes it just makes me incredibly awkward. Am I broken, or is this a secret club I accidentally joined? It's funny, right? We're taught to be polite, to say 'thank you,' but actually receiving praise can feel like a performance. Especially now, with so much of our interaction happening online, the social norms for giving and receiving compliments are, well, a bit blurry. A 'looking good!' emoji comment might be well-intended, but does it land the same way as a heartfelt compliment in person? Sometimes, I find digital compliments can feel less personal, or even a bit too forward if it's someone I don't know well. There's a fine line between a friendly 'You rock!' and something that makes you cringe, especially when tone is lost in text. I often wonder, are we all just fumbling through these digital interactions, trying to figure out the right way to praise or be praised? And then there's the type of compliment. I've noticed that the 'ick' factor goes way down when a compliment is specific. If someone says, 'You look nice,' my automatic thought is, 'Okay, thanks,' and then I move on, maybe feeling a bit self-conscious. But if they say, 'I really love the way you put that outfit together, the colors really suit you!' or 'That was a brilliant point you made in the meeting, I hadn't thought of it that way,' then it feels genuinely meaningful. Specific compliments show that the person has actually noticed something about me, my effort, or my thoughts. They forge a much stronger emotional connection because they feel authentic and personal, rather than just a polite platitude. Generic compliments, while well-intentioned, can sometimes feel like an obligation, and that's often when the 'ick' creeps in for me. This brings me to the underlying motive behind compliments. Sometimes, especially in competitive environments or even certain social circles, compliments can feel less like genuine appreciation and more like a strategy. Have you ever felt like someone was complimenting you to get something, or to soften you up? Or maybe it feels like they're trying to gain an advantage? While the idea of using compliments in 'competitor relationships' sounds very corporate, the core point relates to the authenticity of the compliment. If I sense a hidden agenda, or that the compliment isn't truly about me but about some strategic play, that 'ick' feeling hits hard. It makes me question the sincerity and the relationship itself. I think we all subconsciously gauge the intent behind praise, and if it feels off, it just doesn't land right. So, what's the solution for us 'ick'-sufferers? I'm still figuring it out! I'm trying to pause, take a breath, and truly accept the compliment, even if I feel awkward. A simple, 'Thank you, that means a lot!' is usually enough. And on the flip side, I'm trying to give more specific, authentic compliments myself. Instead of a quick 'Good job,' I'll try to find something truly unique to praise. It makes the compliment more impactful for the receiver and feels more genuine to give. Maybe by understanding why we get the 'ick,' we can all become a little more comfortable in the spotlight, and build stronger, more honest connections in the process. We're not broken, we're just nuanced!
