Why are comp titles important?

I’ve definitely struggled with comp titles in the past. Figuring out what other book my book is like can feel impossible. After all, no one has written this story.

What I’ve ended up settling on is finding elements that are similar. For A Tale of Ashes it has:

🌙 Crecent City like world building

🧚‍♂️ The Cruel Prince fae court shenanigans

🩸 Blood Debts social justice themes

On shelves, you can see it alongside these YA fantasy stories. It’s even been with The Cruel Prince on a fae themed table!

So, if you’re struggling with comp titles, think about the shelf placement and major themes. What would readers of your book also buy in their book hauls?

Hope this helps! 🫶

Comp titles are not just about sales but also about establishing a book’s identity in the market. To identify effective comp titles, writers should consider various aspects such as themes, settings, and character types found in their work. Books that share similar emotional tones and target audiences can also be relevant. When selecting comp titles, think beyond just popular books. Analyze books that have unique elements that resonate with your narrative. For instance, if your book features complex world-building akin to 'Crescent City', this is a clear angle for comparison. Additionally, elements like sub-genres can help refine your choices; for example, books such as 'The Cruel Prince' also get categorically linked due to their fae court dynamics. Engaging in genre communities or forums can provide fresh perspectives on comp titles that might not be immediately obvious. This marks an opportunity for research; doing so can cultivate a deeper understanding of your market landscape. Incorporating these insights into your book marketing strategy can make all the difference, allowing you to not only reach potential readers more effectively but also build a community around your work. Ultimately, having the right comp titles is a strategic tool that can bolster your book's visibility and appeal.
