... Read moreMy absolute favorite part of visiting Colorado Springs was hands down the Garden of the Gods! You know, that feeling when a place just takes your breath away? This is it. And since discovering it's completely free, I just had to share more of my tips for making the most of your visit to these incredible red rock formations. It’s genuinely one of the best free things to do in Colorado! Beyond just snapping photos, there are so many ways to experience the magic of these stunning geologic wonders. I spent hours exploring the various trails. If you're looking for an easy stroll, the paved walking path around the central garden area is perfect for everyone, even with a stroller or wheelchair! It offers stunning, unobstructed views of the red rocks and Pikes Peak without breaking a sweat. For those feeling a bit more adventurous, there are also several unpaved hiking trails that wind through the formations, offering different perspectives and a bit more solitude. Remember to wear your comfy shoes, just like I mentioned before, as you'll be doing a lot of exploring! Before heading out to hit the trails, I always recommend stopping by the Visitor and Nature Center. It's not just a gift shop! I found the mini-museum incredibly insightful, with exhibits on the geology and history of the park. Plus, it's a great spot to learn about the local wildlife – I spotted a few Mule Deer and even a Prairie Lizard, just like the descriptions I saw in the center! The informational sign about WILDLIFE was particularly fascinating. You can also pick up a park map there, which is super helpful for navigating the scenic drives and finding the best viewpoints, ensuring you don't miss any of the iconic red rock formations. Speaking of views, every turn offers a postcard-perfect scene. The way the striking red rock formations contrast with the distant snow-capped Pikes Peak is truly unforgettable. I found that early morning or late afternoon provides the best light for photography, painting the rocks in vibrant hues of orange and red. There are designated scenic overlooks, but I honestly found beauty everywhere, even from the main paved path. The panoramic view Pikes Peak offers from various points within the garden is simply breathtaking. If you're making Garden of the Gods a stop on your Colorado Springs adventure, consider extending your trip to explore a bit more of the area! While Garden of the Gods could easily fill a day, nearby Colorado Springs attractions like the stunning Cheyenne Mountain Zoo or exploring Old Colorado City offer different vibes and things to do near Garden of the Gods. You could even embark on the scenic drive up Pikes Peak itself for even more breathtaking panoramic views, though that's a whole other adventure! Colorado Springs truly has so much to offer for every type of traveler, from outdoor enthusiasts to history buffs. My biggest takeaway? Plan to spend at least 2-3 hours, or even half a day, to truly soak it all in without rushing. Bring plenty of water, especially if you're visiting in the warmer months – the Colorado sun is no joke! It's an outdoor paradise, so dress in layers and be prepared for changing weather. This park is a testament to nature's artistry, and I promise, you'll leave feeling completely refreshed and inspired by these ancient red rocks.
