Spitting cave, Oahu
My favorite spot the hide from the world
You know those places that just make you feel completely at peace, like you've found your own little corner of the world? For me, on Oahu, that's definitely Spitting Cave. It's not just a beautiful viewpoint; it's an experience that truly recharges your soul. I first stumbled upon this gem near Honolulu's Portlock area, and it instantly became my favorite hideaway from the everyday hustle. What makes Spitting Cave so magical? Well, it's all about the raw power of the Pacific Ocean. Nestled along rugged volcanic cliffs, the waves here crash with incredible force, pushing water into a sea cave below. As the pressure builds, plumes of water and mist "spit" out from openings in the rock, creating a spectacular natural show. It’s absolutely mesmerizing to watch and hear the ocean roar. The views stretch endlessly across the turquoise waters, making it an ideal spot for reflection or just soaking in the sheer beauty of nature. Whenever I visit, I love to find a quiet spot on the cliffside, feel the gentle ocean breeze, and just watch the waves. It’s less crowded than some of the more famous Oahu spots, which adds to its appeal as a secret escape. The dramatic scenery also makes for some incredible photos, especially around sunset when the sky lights up with vibrant colors. You can capture the powerful spray against the backdrop of the setting sun – truly unforgettable! If you're planning to visit this incredible spot, here are a few tips from my own experience. Spitting Cave is located on the southeastern side of Oahu, often referred to as the Portlock or Hawaii Kai area, just east of Hanauma Bay. Finding parking can be a bit tricky as it’s in a residential neighborhood, so be respectful of residents. Once you park, it's usually a short walk along a paved path that eventually turns into a dirt trail leading to the cliff's edge. Safety is super important here. There are no guard rails, and the cliffs are steep, so always maintain a safe distance from the edge, especially when the waves are big. Wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain can be uneven. I always recommend going in the late afternoon to catch the sunset, but any time of day offers stunning vistas. Bring water and your camera, but remember to leave no trace behind – let's keep this breathtaking cave pristine for everyone. While Spitting Cave is one of my absolute favorites, Oahu is full of diverse experiences! From serene nature centers to bustling Honolulu eateries, and of course, many beautiful beaches like Lanikai (always check ocean conditions for safety!), there's always something new to explore. But for that perfect blend of dramatic beauty and peaceful solitude, Spitting Cave truly holds a special place in my heart.
