It's always something with horses 🤷🏼‍♀️

How I treat my horses thrush.

Thrush is an infection of the frog area. It's caused by either an anaorobic bacteria, a type of bacteria that thrives in non oxygenated conditions, or a fungus. It's pretty common, especially in wet areas or after a rain. Luckily, it's generally easily treated. It isn't known to be contagious. There is usually a yeast smell associated with it and it can cause hoof soreness and a horse to appear lame. If left untreated it may migrate into deeper hoof structures eventually causing more serious hoof problems, so it is important to address it and not leave it.

The remedy I've used on my horses when my horse has or if I, or my vet suspect they have thrush, is an over the counter thrush treatment. There are several on the market. Some work sometimes, others work others. I someitmes have to play around with various kinds before I find one that's working. I also, keep the area as clean and free of packed dirt as I can. Any dirt or debree in the frog cleft or grooves can reduce air flow to the area. After a few days, I tend to notice the smell going away. I'll treat a few days after the smell has gone just to be safe.

None of this is vet or medical advice, it is just how I personally treat thrush on my own horses, so if you suspect your horse might have thrush or any other health or hoof issue, please call your Veterinarian to evaluate your horse and advise you on the correct course of action for your situation. ♥️

... Read moreHey fellow horse lovers! Dealing with thrush can be one of those frustrating things that just pops up, but over the years, I've learned a few things that really help keep those hooves healthy. Beyond simply treating it when it appears, understanding how to prevent it and recognize the early signs can make a huge difference. When I'm checking my horse's hooves, I'm always on the lookout for that characteristic "yeasty type of smell." But sometimes, it's not just the smell. You might notice a black, gooey discharge in the "frog area" of the hoof, especially in the central or collateral grooves. If these grooves look deeper than usual or if the tissue seems soft and crumbly, those are also big red flags. Sometimes, my horse might even be a little sensitive when I pick out their hooves, especially around the frog. Catching these signs early is crucial for quick and effective "thrush treatment for horses." Prevention really is the best medicine when it comes to thrush. Since "anaerobic bacteria" and "fungus" thrive in environments without much "oxygen," keeping your horse's living conditions as dry and clean as possible is paramount. This means regular stall cleaning, ensuring bedding isn't constantly wet, and making sure turnout areas aren't perpetually muddy. I try to pick out my horses' hooves daily, paying extra attention to clearing out all the "cracks and crevices" around the frog. This not only removes packed dirt and debris but also allows air and "oxygen" to reach those susceptible areas, making it harder for thrush-causing organisms to take hold. A well-trimmed hoof also plays a role, as a good trim helps maintain the natural shape of the frog, reducing deep pockets where moisture can get trapped. When I do have to treat, after thoroughly cleaning the hoof, I make sure the treatment gets deep into those affected areas. There are so many "thrush in horses treatment" options out there. While my personal approach often involves trying a few different over-the-counter options, many horse owners find success with products containing ingredients like copper sulfate, iodine, or specific commercial solutions designed to combat both bacteria and fungus. The key is consistency. It's not a one-and-done deal; you often need to treat daily for several days, or even weeks, until the frog tissue looks healthy again and the smell is completely gone. I usually continue for a few days after I stop noticing symptoms, just to be sure. If you're dealing with a particularly stubborn case, or if the thrush seems to be causing significant lameness or pain, that's definitely the time to call your veterinarian. They can properly assess the situation, rule out other issues, and recommend stronger or different treatments. Remember, while sharing personal experiences is great, a professional's advice is invaluable for your horse's overall health!
