This is a lot for a horse.
Horses ate prey animals. Things poping out unexpectedly from behind doors and walls from behind, can be hard for them to deal with for a flight animal. Also, the light difference between the door and the room the horse is in, can be an issue, because it may take the horses eye longer to adjust to that light change which could make it harder for them to see what's coming out from behind the door. That also could be scarey for them.
This is why we train and prepare horses as much as we do, because it seems so simple to us to open a door and step out of the door or to see someone do that. But for a horse, they don't understand that concept, and so it can be frightening for them. Like a lion coming out from behind a bush. Like, to them it's all the same, so even just me opening a door and walking out behind a horse, poses a risk that it could scare my horse.
I have worked with him, my horse, a long time opening and shuting doors. Barn doors, car doors, most recently Porta potty doors because those are often used at shows so he's pretty good with doors now and people coming in and out of them.
I just wanted to bring this up, because, it isn't something that I see talked about alot, but it's really an important part of horse training. People often have no idea that horses really need to be trained to be used to such basic things someitmes. I also hope it helps people who might wonder why their horse may spook when a door opens around them. It's totally normal, and it might just need to be part of the training to work a horse that spooks when doors open, to work them around doors. Anyway, that's all. ☺️
