Foochow Association (Singapore)
My grandpa born in 1902. We are 福州人。We can't find him in 光明山。Surprisingly, during a dinner invitation, I found his photo in 福州会馆。He donated $5000 in 1960s, alongside with other philanthropists, towards the building of our country , Singapore. Thank you very much 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I also found 郭兄弟私人有限公司,currently the owner of the Shangri-la hotels , surprised to know they are 福州人(Foochow) too. They donated $100,000 according to what was written on the tablet. Very grateful to all the Philanthropists found in these tablets, donated so much during the thriving times of Singapore. As such , generations down, we can enjoy living in a peaceful and harmony country 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Through my exploration of the Foochow Association in Singapore, I learned how foundational the Foochow community's efforts were in supporting the growth and harmony of our country. Many Foochow individuals donated generously during pivotal times, not only contributing funds but also fostering unity among diverse cultures. This legacy of philanthropy is visible today in landmarks, community centers, and historical records displayed in the Foochow Association. What strikes me most is the deep respect and appreciation held for these early philanthropists, such as my grandfather and prominent business families who played a significant role in nation-building. It’s inspiring to see tablets and photographs honoring their contributions, reminding us how their sacrifices paved the way for a peaceful society. If you're interested in Foochow culture or Singapore’s history, visiting the Foochow Association offers a rich insight into these stories. The association is a hub where descendants gather, celebrate traditions, and remember the efforts that helped craft Singapore’s vibrant multicultural identity. Preserving these memories fosters pride and encourages future generations to uphold these values of giving back and community harmony.
