MY RING BEFORE MARRIAGE

Last year my mom gave me a setting ring that belonged to my aunt Molly. She was a 300lb woman whose laugh could be heard from a mile away. They called her jolly molly. When she got married she threatened her husband that if he cheated on her like he did her first wife she’d “cut it off” and he never did.

I always thought it was a pretty cool story. A little wacky but something from my family that I could hold onto.

For a while I wore it while it was empty, still being a beautiful ring with heart designs and what looked like petals in the middle around where the biggest diamond was supposed to be.

Eventually I decided to get it filled. I made the center diamond a bit bigger (0.25C) But since I’m a person who lives for meaning and emotion- I wanted it to mean something. The more I thought about it, the ring could represent my independence and self reliance. A statement that said I didn’t need anyone to be happy and that I could do everything myself. I had seen a lot of divorced women doing that themselves and felt inspired by their gumption. But I felt like there was a lack of something. Around this time I was struggling in my spirituality, which had always been something that was very important to me.

I was in a rough spot around that time and in a cry of desperation I decided to trust God. A hard decision that I’m still struggling with now. I believe that the .25C would represent the faith I put in the lord, and eventually that investment would grow 4x more through God’s will to bless me. I made sure that the ring represented a new chapter in my life. And it does

The act of repurposing family heirlooms often resonates deeply, merging nostalgia with identity. Promise rings, for instance, symbolize commitment, love, and values that transcend conventional engagement rings. They often convey a promise of love and support, either to oneself or to a partner, enriching one’s personal story. Spirituality also plays a crucial role in discerning the meanings attached to jewelry, encouraging individuals to reflect on their beliefs and values. The narrative of turning an empty ring into a filled treasure draws from centuries of tradition where jewelry marks pivotal life transitions and personal growth. In many cultures, diamonds represent strength and durability, reminding wearers of resilience. They inspire confidence and self-discovery, making them perfect for anyone embarking on a new chapter in their life. This unique combination of personal history and emotional experience showcases how rings can be powerful symbols of self-assertion and devotion, whether to oneself or a higher purpose.
