Apple Sensory Play in Preschool

Looking for a good Apple sensory activity? Then check this out ⬆️

Perfect for color sorting, counting, and fine motor in your preschool or kindergarten classroom this fall! My favorite fall theme is always apples and these bins from the @Dollar Tree are the perfect fit for rice sensory bins! Also don’t forget to save those paper towel tubes to make apple trees!

... Read moreBuilding an engaging and educational sensory bin doesn't have to be complicated, and I've found that apple-themed bins are always a huge hit with the kids! I wanted to share more about how I create these, why they're so fantastic for prek activity ideas, and some extra tips to make your own preschool fun successful. Sensory play is truly invaluable for young learners. It's not just about keeping them busy; it's a powerful tool for holistic development. Beyond the obvious fine motor development from scooping and pouring, sensory bins stimulate cognitive growth by encouraging problem-solving and critical thinking. Children learn about textures, weights, and volumes. Emotionally, it can be incredibly calming and provides an outlet for self-expression. For language development, it builds vocabulary as children describe what they're doing and feeling. For our apple theme, it’s a perfect way to introduce concepts related to nature and harvesting during the fall. To make my apple sensory bin, I start with simple and affordable materials. My favorite are those plastic bins from the Dollar Tree – they're just the right size! The main filler consists of dyed chickpeas and dyed rice. Dying them is super easy: just put a cup or two of rice/chickpeas in a Ziploc bag, add a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol or white vinegar, and a few drops of food coloring (red, green, and yellow for apples!). Shake it up, spread it on a tray to dry, and you're good to go. This simple step transforms plain grains into beautiful, vibrant “apples” that are the perfect colour of apples. Once the base is ready, I add in various elements to encourage different skills. Small scoops, cups, and tongs are excellent for developing fine motor skills. For color sorting, I might add little bowls labeled with red, green, and yellow, or even use small apple cutouts. The OCR mentioned counting cards, which are fantastic! I use laminated cards with numbers or dots, and the children have to find that colour chickpea and that number and then, as the OCR also noted, drop it down the tube – usually a simple paper towel tube taped upright. This specific action is brilliant for hand-eye coordination and number recognition. Sometimes I add fake leaves, small plastic apples, or even cinnamon sticks for an extra sensory experience. Here are a few tips I've learned for making sensory bin time a success: Set Clear Expectations: Before starting, I always discuss the rules: “Keep the rice in the bin,” “Share the scoops,” etc. Designated Area: Use a mat or tray underneath the bin to contain spills. An outdoor patio or a corner with easy-to-clean flooring is ideal. Rotate Materials: To keep interest high, I change the theme or materials every few weeks or months. This ensures children remain engaged and excited. Observe and Engage: Don't just set it up and walk away. Observe how children interact, ask open-ended questions, and join in the play! Beyond this specific sensory bin setup, there are so many other prek activity ideas centered around apples for fall. You could do an apple taste test, comparing different varieties. Apple printing with cut apples and paint is a classic art activity. We've also explored apple science by seeing if apples sink or float, or cutting them open to discover the star inside. Reading apple-themed books like "Ten Red Apples" or "Apples A to Z" can further enrich the learning experience. All these activities tie together beautifully, making learning about apples a comprehensive and joyful experience for young children during the autumn season. It’s all about hands-on learning and making those early educational moments memorable!
