International Steampunk Contest Victory ✌️

It still feels like yesterday, even though it was all the way back in 2019, before everything changed. Winning that Steampunk costume contest in Gananoque was honestly one of the highlights of my year! I remember the moment they called my name, standing on that stage, holding what felt like the heaviest "VICTROLA" box award – pure exhilaration! Crafting that costume was a true labor of love. I wanted something that felt authentic yet showcased my personal flair. The centerpiece, of course, was the blue and black corset. Finding one that was both comfortable and visually striking took some searching, but it was worth it. I paired it with a layered skirt, designed to give that classic Victorian silhouette with a bit of a whimsical, adventurous twist. Every ruffle and fold was carefully considered to create movement and depth. Then came the details that truly brought the character to life. My hair was styled into those grey curly pigtails, adding a playful yet sophisticated touch, hinting at a character who might be an inventor or an airship mechanic with a penchant for style. Accessories were crucial: a delicate blue fan for a touch of elegance and a rustic metal mug hanging from my belt, ready for a spot of tea or perhaps a stronger brew after a long day of adventuring. I spent hours scavenging for gears, cogs, and tiny clock parts to adorn various parts of the outfit, from my hat (which isn't visible in these photos but was definitely part of the ensemble!) to my boots. It's amazing how those little metallic touches can transform an outfit into something truly steampunk. The atmosphere at the Gananoque contest was incredible. Everyone was so passionate about their creations, and the air buzzed with creativity. Seeing all the different interpretations of steampunk fashion, from explorers to mad scientists, was inspiring. When it was my turn to present, I just tried to embody the character, smiling and enjoying every second. I remember standing there next to a gentleman in a striking military-inspired steampunk uniform, and we were both just beaming. The judges definitely looked for attention to detail, originality, and how well the overall aesthetic was pulled together. For anyone looking to get into steampunk cosplay or considering entering a contest, my biggest advice is to start with a concept you love. Don't be afraid to mix and match eras and styles – that's the beauty of steampunk! Think about your character's backstory: are they an airship captain, an inventor, a time traveler? This helps inform your choices, from the color palette to the choice of accessories like goggles or a pocket watch. Thrift stores and craft shops are your best friends for finding unique pieces and materials on a budget. And remember, it's not just about the outfit; it's about the attitude and the joy of bringing a character to life. Being part of the steampunk community is such a rewarding experience, filled with wonderfully creative and supportive people.
