... Read moreCreating original characters (OCs) for a beloved horror game like Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion has been such an exciting journey for me! I've always loved the unique creatures and atmosphere of the game, and imagining my own characters encountering its mysteries felt like a natural extension of that passion. It's a fantastic way to engage with the fandom and bring new life to a world we all adore.
When I started designing Darla, my sad blue ghost character, I wanted her to feel like she truly belonged in Spooky's. Her light blue hue and long hair, combined with her often sad or shy expression, were intentional choices to give her a sense of melancholic beauty rather than just being outright terrifying. I pictured her wearing a distinctive white cap and collared shirt, which adds a touch of innocent vulnerability to her ghostly presence. Sometimes, she'll even show a surprised expression when encountering something unexpected, which really adds to her charm. Imagining her floating through the mansion, perhaps observing the other specimens from a distance, really helped shape her overall look and personality.
Then there's Connie, my deer-like OC. I drew inspiration from the game's existing specimens, but wanted to put my own spin on it. I envisioned her as a cartoon character resembling a deer, with beautiful brown fur and intricate antlers. Her expression often shifts between concerned and sad, giving her a very empathetic feel. The idea of her looking "like a deer in headlights" in certain situations really stuck with me, hinting at a cautious, perhaps easily startled, personality. Is she wearing a deer costume, or is she a creature of the mansion herself? I love leaving that a bit open to interpretation, adding to her mystique.
Choosing names for OCs can sometimes be just as fun as designing them! For me, "Connie" and "Darla" felt right because they have a classic, slightly old-fashioned charm that I think complements the eerie, timeless feel of Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion. I wanted names that were simple yet memorable, allowing their designs and backstories to shine through. It's really about finding names that resonate with the character's essence – whether it's their appearance, their proposed role in the story, or even just a gut feeling.
Integrating OCs like Connie and Darla into the Spooky's universe is where the real fun begins. I often think about how they would interact with the mansion's environment, or even with the game's canon characters. Would Darla's sad blue ghost form try to communicate warnings, or would Connie, the deer-like character, stumble upon secrets hidden within the mansion's many rooms? Creating OCs allows for endless possibilities and enriches the fan experience by personally contributing to the game's lore. I hope my shared art and character details inspire other fans to create their own unique inhabitants for Spooky's House of Jumpscares!
