God of Malice
In the words of my 7 year old daughter…who’s Malice?
When I chose to read this book, I was in the mood for something dark. And I found it. This is a book you should check the trigger warnings on before reading. I think triggering content and level of darkness can probably be compared to Haunting Adeline, for reference.
I’ve debated over what to rank this one at. For me, it falls around 3.5-4/5.
At the start of the book, the author had a note that basically said the MMC is a villain and is still a villain by the end of the book. Don’t expect him to reform. When I read this, I thought, oh…not sure how this is going to work out because if there’s no character arc, I don’t know that I’m going to feel satisfied. Turns out, the arc exists. Also my opinion, MMC reforms as much as you might expect the MMC of a dark romance to.
I enjoyed the plot of the book, the overall story, and the writing style of the author. This was the first book of hers I read. Am I going to go read book 2? Maybe sometime, but not right now.
What I didn’t like…it got repetitive for me pretty quickly, and although the spicy scenes did vary, I felt like the number of scenes could have been cut in half. I don’t mind spice, but I don’t read for the spice. It got to the point I was scanning the spicy scenes to get through them and back to the story. I do understand the spice plays a significant role in the MMC’s character, but I don’t feel like it was necessary to give a play by play of every intimate moment. If you want a book with tons of spicy scenes, this one will probably rate higher for you.
The other reason I struggled to rate this book is because although I wanted to keep reading, it didn’t suck me in to the point of obsession. In fact, it took me nearly half way into the book to start to feel any pull to keep going. I was enjoying it, so it’s not that reading it was a chore, it just didn’t feel like I wanted to forget my responsibilities to keep going. Hope that makes sense.
Anyway, I’ll probably continue the series at some point. It’s just not one I’m rushing to go buy and plow through immediately.
