Lmk if you want another Christmas toy haul! 🥰
Finding amazing toys for free, especially around the holidays, is one of my favorite mom hacks! It's not just about saving money (though that's a huge bonus!), it's also about giving pre-loved items a new life and reducing waste. My recent Christmas toy haul from a local mom group was a prime example of the treasures you can unearth if you know where to look and what to do with them. My go-to place for these kinds of finds is definitely my local mom group, whether it's on Facebook or a local app. People are often just looking to clear out clutter and are happy for their gently used items to go to a good home. Beyond mom groups, I've had great luck with 'Buy Nothing' groups, neighborhood apps like Nextdoor, and even local toy swaps. These communities are fantastic for connecting with others who are decluttering or looking to give away things they no longer need. When I'm hunting for free toys, I always keep a few things in mind. First, safety is paramount, especially for younger kids. I check for any broken pieces that could be sharp or choking hazards. Second, I don't shy away from toys that need a little love. For example, in my recent haul, I found some fantastic light-up toys that just needed batteries. Swapping out old batteries for new ones is a super easy fix that makes a toy feel brand new! I also picked up a toy bus, which I know my son, who loves riding the bus to school, will absolutely adore, even if it was missing a minor piece. Kids often don’t notice or care about minor imperfections like a missing door on a car or a small piece from a playset – they're more focused on the joy of playing. Sometimes I find unique items too, like a small toy 'jail cell' from a playset. These unexpected finds can spark incredible imaginative play. The goal isn't always to find a specific brand like a 'VTech Style and Glam Unicorn,' but rather to find toys that are engaging and can inspire creativity. However, if you are looking for specific popular items, keeping an eye on these groups consistently can surprisingly yield results. People frequently give away popular brands as kids outgrow them quickly. Even if it's not the exact 'glam unicorn,' you might find another interactive animal or a well-loved doll that can be 'glammed up' with some ribbons or accessories. Once I bring my free treasures home, the first thing I do is a thorough clean. A good wipe-down with child-safe disinfectant wipes or a gentle wash (for plastic toys) makes them hygienic and ready for gifting. For toys with missing pieces, I sometimes get creative – a small piece of cardboard can become a new door, or I might repurpose parts from other broken toys. Packaging them nicely, perhaps in a new box or with a pretty bow, also adds to the magic. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing I’m giving my child, or another child, a gift that brings joy, saves money, and is kind to the planet. It’s truly a win-win-win situation!
