I came across these in the freezer section and couldn’t resist trying!! It sounded like a perfect combo, so I gave it a try!!
Sunny D Mangoes $5.99 (8/10) - These were actually pretty good, I liked the flavor combo, Sunny D definitely fits the flavor combo for mangoes!! My only issue is the texture. The coating is super thick and I can’t get past how crunchy it is and rough on the outside! Maybe if the coating was lighter, I would like it more!
Sour Grapes $5.99 (5/10) - The texture of the grapes were interesting. I bit right through it and I didn’t care for their taste. The sour notes in the coating were a bit much for me. It caused my face to scrunch up so it is definitely sour! I just couldn’t enjoy it, it was too sour!
Overall, I believe if you enjoy fruit riot, the Sunny D collab is for you! I liked it more than the sour grapes, so it has some potential!
... Read moreI've been seeing Fruit Riot everywhere lately, and the Sunny D collaboration definitely caught my eye. As someone who loves trying new snacks, especially unique frozen treats, I couldn't resist picking up both the SunnyD x Fruit Riot Crunchy Candy Mango and the Fruit Riot Sour Grapes from the freezer aisle. There's so much buzz around these, and I was eager to experience them for myself.
For those who haven't heard, Fruit Riot is all about taking frozen fruit and giving it a fun, candy-like twist. It's not just plain frozen fruit; they add these intriguing coatings that are supposed to elevate the snacking experience. It feels like a nostalgic nod to those candy-coated treats from childhood, but with real fruit inside. It’s certainly a fresh take on traditional frozen fruit snacks, aiming for that perfect blend of healthy-ish and indulgent.
My original thoughts on the Sunny D Mangoes focused a lot on the texture, and I stand by that – the coating is very thick. It's labeled as 'Crunchy Candy Mango,' and they certainly delivered on the 'crunchy' part! I think the Sunny D flavor itself pairs surprisingly well with the mango, offering that tangy sweetness we all know and love from the classic drink. However, that thick, almost shell-like coating really changes the game. I found myself wishing it was a bit thinner, perhaps allowing the natural mango flavor to shine through more. It felt like I was eating a candy shell with mango as a surprise inside, rather than a mango enhanced by a candy coating. If you're a fan of those super crunchy, artificial candy textures, you might actually love this aspect more than I did! It's interesting to note that these SunnyD x Fruit Riot Crunchy Candy Mangoes come in at just '50 calories per serving', which is pretty good for a sweet treat, especially when you're craving something indulgent.
Now, onto the Fruit Riot Sour Grapes. My initial reaction was that they were just too sour, and that still holds true for me. They really make your face scrunch up! But beyond the sourness, the texture of the grapes themselves was quite unique once bitten. It wasn't just a regular frozen grape; there was a slight chewiness to it that I wasn't expecting, which I found a bit odd. The coating here was also very prominent, and its sourness really overpowered everything else, making it hard to taste the grape itself. If you're someone who adores extremely sour candies and that intense puckering sensation, these might be your new obsession. For me, they were a bit of an adventure I'm not sure I'll repeat. These 'Fruit Riot Sour Grapes' are listed at '45 calories per serving', which is also a light snack option if you can handle the pucker power!
So, why are these Fruit Riot products generating so much buzz? I think it boils down to novelty and the quest for healthier-ish snack alternatives. People are constantly looking for treats that feel indulgent but offer a little something extra, like real fruit. This 'collab' with Sunny D also taps into a huge wave of nostalgia for many people. It’s perfect for summer snacks, a quick pick-me-up, or even just satisfying a sweet craving without reaching for a full-blown dessert. They're definitely a fun conversation starter, and kids (and adventurous adults!) would probably get a kick out of the intense flavors and textures. If you're planning to try them, especially the Sunny D Mangoes, I'd suggest letting them sit out for just a minute or two after taking them from the freezer. Sometimes a slight thaw can soften the coating just enough to make it more enjoyable. Or, if you're like me and prefer less intense sourness, maybe try pairing the sour grapes with something sweet to balance it out, or just stick to a single piece to get your sour fix!
Overall, while the Fruit Riot concept is super interesting, my personal experience leans towards the Sunny D Mangoes being the more palatable of the two. Even with the thick coating, the flavor combination was a winner. The Sour Grapes, though, are definitely for the extreme sour candy lovers out there. It's a unique take on frozen fruit, and if you're curious, it's worth trying at least once to form your own opinion! Just be prepared for a strong crunch and a powerful pucker!
