Drawing eyes can feel intimidating at first, but trust me, with a little practice and understanding of basic shapes, you'll be surprised at what you can achieve! When I first started, I struggled with making eyes look symmetrical and expressive. My biggest breakthrough came when I realized that every eye, no matter how detailed or stylized, starts with a simple form: a sphere or a circle. Think of the eye as a marble sitting inside a socket. This foundational sphere is crucial for understanding perspective and depth. I always begin by lightly sketching this basic orb. From there, I use horizontal and vertical lines as a guide. These lines help me place the eye accurately on the face and ensure both eyes are looking in the same direction. The vertical line marks the center of the eye, and the horizontal line helps define the eye level. Depending on where you want your character to look, you'll adjust these lines accordingly. For instance, if they are looking up, the horizontal line might shift. Next, I focus on the eyelids. This is where the eye truly starts to take shape! Instead of drawing one continuous line, I find it incredibly helpful to break down the shape. For the top eyelid, I imagine it as three distinct sections, and the bottom eyelid as two sections. This approach helps create a more natural curve and avoids that stiff, almond-like shape many beginners struggle with. You can experiment with rounding out the top and bottom or keeping sharper angles – both can create unique looks. I personally like to have thicker lines on the outer corner of the eye; it adds a bit of weight and definition that really makes the eye pop. Once the basic eyelid shape is down, it’s time for the cornea and pupil. Remember, the cornea isn't perfectly round; it's a dome-like structure that often touches or is slightly covered by the top eyelid. The pupil, the black center, will be right in the middle of the cornea. Pay attention to how much of the cornea is visible; this can dramatically change the expression. A lot of the cornea showing can make the character look surprised, while less might make them look sleepy or intense. One of the most important tips I can give you is to practice this until you get the hang of it and look at reference photos! Don't be afraid to study real eyes, photos of eyes, or even your own reflection. Notice the subtle variations in shape, the way light catches the eye, and how the eyelids interact with the eyeball.
