Before and After Ink🐈‍⬛

Have you ever considered what makes a "universal sketch" truly universal? For me, it's about capturing a fundamental idea or emotion that resonates with everyone, regardless of artistic style or background. It’s the foundational drawing, the initial spark, that can then be developed into something more elaborate. My recent "Day 4: Cat" piece, which I'm excited to share, began exactly this way – as a universal sketch exploring powerful, stylized forms. When I started this drawing, my goal was to convey a sense of primal energy and mystery. I began with a light pencil sketch on my Funto Art watercolor postcard paper. This initial stage is crucial for any artist. It's where you lay down the basic shapes and composition without the pressure of perfection. I used a mechanical pencil for its precision, allowing me to carefully outline the three main elements: a commanding roaring cat face in the center, flanked by two equally mesmerizing human-like faces with cracked textures. These elements, though stylized, tap into universally understood archetypes of strength, wisdom, and perhaps vulnerability. The "before ink" stage is all about exploration. I spent time refining the contours of the stylized masks, ensuring they had the right balance and expressive qualities. The beauty of starting with a pencil is that mistakes are easily erased, allowing for freedom to experiment with different curves and angles. I truly believe that the stronger your initial sketch, the more impactful your final inked piece will be. It’s like building a solid foundation for a house; you want it to be robust. Then came the transformation – applying the ink. This is where the magic really happens, turning those soft pencil lines into bold, dramatic statements. For this project, I reached for my Grabie fineliners. The crisp, consistent lines they produce are perfect for defining intricate details and creating strong contrasts. I meticulously went over every line of my pencil sketch, bringing out the intensity of the roaring cat face and the worn texture of the human-like faces. The decision to use a limited palette of red and black ink was deliberate. Black provides depth and definition, while red introduces a powerful emotional punch. You can see this especially in how the central cat face has red eyes and red details, creating a captivating focal point. The subtle red accents on the human-like masks also amplify their mysterious and slightly ominous aura. It’s amazing how just two colors can evoke such a strong mood! Working on Funto Art watercolor postcard paper was a joy because it handles ink so beautifully. The paper has a slight texture that adds character to the lines, and it holds the fineliner ink without bleeding, which is essential for clean, sharp edges. This transformation from a simple, foundational "universal sketch" to a vibrant, finished piece is incredibly rewarding. It shows how even a basic concept can be elevated through careful inking and thoughtful color choices.
