Hey everyone! So, as you saw in my first post, I just shared a simple design for one of my original characters (OCs). It's been such a fun journey diving into the world of Character designing, and honestly, it's more than just drawing a pretty picture! I've been spending a lot of time thinking about how to make my OCs truly unique and memorable, and I wanted to share some of the brainstorming ideas and coloring techniques I've found helpful so far. It's all a learning process, but hopefully, my tips can give you a little boost too! When I first started character designing, I used to just jump straight into drawing, but I quickly realized that a solid foundation makes all the difference. My go-to now is to start with brainstorming ideas. I usually begin by thinking about their core concept: What's their personality like? What's their backstory? What role do they play in their world? Sometimes I just free-write a bunch of adjectives or even create a small mood board with images that evoke the feeling I want for them. For instance, if I want a mischievous character, I might look at pictures of foxes, jesters, or even certain color palettes. Don't be afraid to pull inspiration from anywhere – nature, mythology, everyday objects! Another cool trick I picked up is sketching out different silhouettes. It helps ensure your character is recognizable even without details, which is super important for an iconic design. I try to make sure each OC has one or two really unique visual traits that make them stand out. Once I have a good idea of their essence, I move on to thinking about coloring techniques. This part can be intimidating, but it’s also where your character truly comes to life! I’ve been experimenting a lot with different approaches. One thing I learned early on is that colors communicate a lot about a character. For a calm, reliable character, I might lean towards cool blues and greens, while a fiery, energetic one might get warm reds and oranges. I usually start with a basic color palette, making sure the colors complement each other and don't clash. I use a limited palette at first to keep things simple. Then, I think about whether I want flat colors for a more stylized look, or if I want to add shading and highlights for more depth. I'm still practicing, but understanding basic light sources and how they hit different shapes has really elevated my simple drawings. I often look for tutorials online (sometimes even free downloads of color palettes or brush sets!) to get new ideas and practice different styles. Experimenting is key – don't be afraid to try out bold combinations or subtle gradients. Every time I finish a piece, I learn something new about how colors interact and how they can enhance my character's story. It’s been an incredible journey of character designing so far, and seeing my OCs evolve from just a few ideas to fully realized designs is incredibly rewarding.
