the surreal rhinoceros

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a bit more about my process and inspiration behind my surreal rhinoceros illustration. When I started on this piece, my goal was to truly dive into the world of surrealism, which for me, means taking something familiar and twisting it into an unexpected, dreamlike reality. Surrealism in illustration is incredibly freeing. It's not about perfect realism, but about evoking emotion and wonder through illogical juxtapositions and symbolic imagery. For this rhinoceros, I wasn't just drawing an animal; I was creating a narrative within a single image. The idea of a rhinoceros, a creature of immense power and grounded presence, suddenly becoming ethereal and dynamic was really exciting to explore. I chose color pencils for this drawing because I find they offer such a rich range of possibilities for blending and layering, which is essential for achieving those deep, otherworldly tones. Getting the "dark, reddish-purple body" just right involved many layers of different shades, building up the depth and texture. It's a delicate balance to make it look both solid and yet, somehow, not quite of this world. The most fun part, and perhaps the most challenging, was imagining and executing the surreal elements. The "snout emitting an orange and yellow flame-like swirl" really pushes the boundaries of reality, adding a burst of energy and mystery. What does it symbolize? Perhaps inner fire, or a release of creative energy. And then, having its body merge into a "blue cylindrical base" gives it an architectural, almost otherworldly foundation, grounding the fantastical elements in an abstract structure. When you're trying to create your own surreal illustrations, I'd suggest starting with something familiar, like an animal or an everyday object, and then ask yourself: 'How can I make this impossible? How can I give it a hidden meaning?' Think about dream logic – things often don't make sense, but they feel right. Experiment with unexpected color palettes, like the vivid contrast of the "white horns" against the dark body, or the bright flames. Color pencil drawing can be a fantastic medium for surrealism because you can achieve such fine details and smooth transitions, which helps in making the impossible seem tangible. Don't be afraid to combine elements that don't traditionally belong together.
