pregnancy for dog owners 🐕🦴
hello ◡̈
Did you know your doggo might detect your pregnancy before you even take a test? Dogs are incredibly intuitive, and their keen senses can pick up on subtle changes in their environment — including their owner's body chemistry.
As you prepare for the arrival of your new addition, introducing your loyal companion to the baby can be a fun experience. I mean you’re introducing your fur baby to your human baby, how exciting! To ensure a smooth transition from pregnancy to parenthood, I've put together this guide to help support you! Congratulations! 🫶🏼🥹
It's truly amazing how our dogs seem to just know when something big is happening, isn't it? When I was pregnant, I noticed so many little shifts in my fur baby's behavior that made me wonder, 'Can dogs really sense pregnancy?' And the answer, from my experience and what I've learned, is a resounding yes! They're not just being intuitive; their incredible senses pick up on things we can't. Many of you might be wondering, 'How exactly do dogs sense pregnancy at 1 week or even earlier?' It's mostly down to their powerful sense of smell. Our bodies undergo significant hormonal changes during pregnancy, leading to subtle alterations in our scent. While we might not notice it, our dogs absolutely do! Beyond scent, they also pick up on changes in our behavior, our voice (perhaps becoming softer or more tired), and even our emotional state. If you find your dog resting their head on your pregnant belly more often, or being extra cuddly, it's their way of acknowledging these shifts and often showing a beautiful, protective behavior. These changes can manifest in various ways, leading to distinct dog behavior during pregnancy. Some dogs become incredibly protective, almost like a furry bodyguard. They might stick closer to you, bark more at strangers, or even try to 'herd' you away from perceived threats. Other dogs might become more affectionate, showering you with extra licks and snuggles. It's crucial to understand these dog pregnancy behavior changes are usually rooted in their bond with you and their instinct to protect their pack. However, some dogs might also show signs of anxiety or confusion due to the disruption of routine and your own changing energy levels. Preparing your dog for the baby's arrival is key to a smooth transition. I started by desensitization to sounds of babies crying and cooing – there are plenty of audio tracks online! Then, I slowly introduced baby items like the crib, stroller, and baby powder. Letting my dog sniff these new things helped him get used to the incoming smells and sights. We also practiced new routines, like walking at different times or having shorter play sessions, to gradually prepare him for the inevitable changes in our daily schedule. Remember those pregnancy precautions: encouraging gentle interactions, preventing sudden dog jumps, and ensuring their vaccinations are up to date are all part of responsible pet ownership during this time. When it finally came to the initial introduction, I made sure it was calm and supervised. Bringing home a blanket with the baby's scent from the hospital first was a game-changer. Then, when they met, it was short, positive interactions, always rewarding calm behavior. Post-introduction, it's about maintaining a sense of routine for your dog as much as possible and ensuring they still get attention and exercise. It's normal for some dogs to need more time to adjust, perhaps showing signs of jealousy or confusion initially. Patience and understanding are your best tools. Every dog adapts differently, but with love, preparation, and consistent positive reinforcement, your fur baby and human baby can become the best of friends.

my boyfriends dog has become more aggressive and rude towards me when he's not around since I got pregnant, and half of the time she will literally get in-between me and my partner and physically push me away and she can tell my knees are hurting and will purposely plop her whole body weight directly onto my knees and only my knees. my dog had become an angel and wants to cuddle and stay close to me while also being able to tell when I don't want any animals on me
