Why I started reading again

#storytime #lemon8challenge

During school I never had time to read and when I finished it wasn’t a priority I had because I had just spent so many years having to read so many things I didn’t want to read.

That’s why I stopped. I started again in 2021 the month my dad suddenly passed away from a very short cancer battle. My dad had always been an avid reader my entire life. He would check out 3-4 books every 2 weeks from the library and completely devour them. When he died I thought about how I would never see him sitting there reading anymore and I missed that. To feel closer to him I started reading again. In 2021 I read 24 books, and every year up to now I have read more and more books.

Even though I don’t read the same types of books my dad would read, just the act of diving into a book not only had helped me to heal but also to feel a little bit closer to someone I miss desperately.

... Read moreReading can be a powerful tool for healing and self-discovery, especially during times of emotional distress. The act of reading offers an escape and a way to process feelings. Many find comfort in revisiting favorite books or discovering new stories that resonate. Literary therapy has emerged as a field, showing that engaging with books can bolster mental health, enhance empathy, and provide solace during tough moments. Incorporating reading into daily routines can foster mindfulness and relaxation, creating a sense of control and connection to the world. Whether diving into classics or contemporary works, the experience of immersing oneself in a narrative can encourage reflection and emotional growth. Moreover, sharing reading experiences with others, such as participating in book clubs or online communities, can deepen the enjoyment and offer new perspectives on familiar texts. As one navigates grief and longing, connecting with literature can bridge the gap between cherished memories and present-day realities. In this beautiful journey of rediscovery, each book read becomes a tribute to those lost, facilitating a journey that honors their memory while enriching the reader's life.
