Dance with your darkness
Hey everyone! So, you might have seen my post about 'dancing with your darkness,' and I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what that truly means for me, especially since many of us might initially think of literal dance. When I talk about dancing with your darkness, I'm really talking about a profound journey into shadow work – the process of acknowledging and integrating the parts of ourselves we often hide or deny. It’s not about becoming 'dark' or embracing negativity. Instead, it’s about recognizing that our 'shadows' are often just our unspoken truths, deeply buried emotions, or aspects of our personality that society, or even ourselves, have deemed unacceptable. For a long time, I feared these parts, pushing them down, thinking they made me less whole. But what I discovered is that true wholeness comes from embracing all of yourself. That powerful quote, 'Shadows aren't meant to be feared - they're your unspoken truths,' really resonated with me. It shifted my perspective from seeing my shadow as an enemy to seeing it as a wise, if sometimes challenging, teacher. This 'dance' isn't always graceful; sometimes it feels more like a clumsy stumble, and other times, a fierce tango. But every step is essential for growth. One practice that really helped me, inspired by the idea of 'lighting a black candle tonight and asking your shadow what it desires,' was creating a dedicated space for reflection. I often light a black candle – for grounding and absorbing negativity, in my practice – and then I sit in silence, asking my shadow specific questions. It's not always about grand desires; sometimes it's as simple as, 'What am I afraid of right now?' or 'What emotion am I avoiding?' The answers aren’t always immediate or easy, but they’re always insightful. Another powerful way to 'dance' is through journaling. I found that writing freely, without judgment, allowed my shadow self to speak. What are your triggers? What makes you disproportionately angry or sad? Often, these reactions point to unhealed wounds or unmet needs within your shadow. Instead of suppressing them, try to understand them. Ask: 'What is this anger trying to tell me?' or 'What belief is fueling this sadness?' This process of deep inquiry is a dance of questioning and listening. I also found immense value in creative expression. Sometimes, our shadow speaks in ways words can't capture. Painting, drawing, or even just free-form movement can be incredibly cathartic and reveal hidden aspects of your inner world. Don't worry about skill; focus on expression. Let your body move how it wants to, or let your hands create without a plan. This allows your subconscious to communicate with you. It’s about befriending these parts, treating them with compassion, rather than trying to conquer them. When you embrace these 'unspoken truths,' you reclaim energy that was previously spent on suppression. This integration leads to incredible personal power and authenticity. You become less reactive, more grounded, and truly in tune with your deepest self.
