Truthfully , 3 years into my journey I could talk all day about the pros and cons. I wish I had someone who could break it down to me like this before I started so I truly knew what I was getting myself into , but it would not have changed my decision to become a hairstylist. Being a hairstylist is a unique journey that offers numerous rewards and some significant challenges. On the positive side, hairstylists enjoy creative expression and flexibility. Many professionals appreciate the ability to craft their own schedules, often leading to extended weekends. The hairstyling profession allows individuals to work in a variety of environments—ranging from local salons to glamorous TV sets and Broadway shows—often leading to thrilling travel opportunities. Additional benefits include the chance to provide complimentary services and connect with diverse clients, fostering a valuable networking experience in a dynamic industry. However, the hairstyling career isn't without its drawbacks. Long hours can be a reality, especially with early mornings and late nights becoming the norm. Professionals may face no paid time off (PTO) and are responsible for out-of-pocket insurance payments, which can add financial strain. Additionally, hairstylists often deal with the unpredictability of appointments, such as no-call and no-shows, which can disrupt their schedules. Costs associated with booth rental, inventory, and equipment can pile up, presenting unavoidable financial challenges.
