how to style layers for changing weather
Girlssss I’m obsessed with this red jacket! I’ve been looking for a short wool coat like this & I finally found it. & yes it’s 100% merino wool 🤩❤️ vintage & perfect. I know red isn’t for everyone but I personally love it in the winter and actually think the color suits me quite well. The best part about a lightweight wool coat is you can LAYER! Layering can completely change the vibe of your entire look.
Layer 1: basic cream turtleneck sweater
it’s a basic for a reason! It goes with everything, it’s comfy, it’s cute. You know you can trust it & I’m betting most of you own one! The turtleneck keeps me warm even without the layers, but if I need more I can easily add more.
❤️ Layer tip: put the item with the most coverage on first.
Layer 2: red wool jacket
It’s lightweight and pairs perfectly over the turtleneck. But it’s 100% wool so it actually keeps me warm. For this look, the coat is the outfit which is super easy & super chic for the colder weather. I buttoned it all the way to the top because the first layer is high neck, but it would look cute unbuttoned as well.
❤️Layer tip: choose a layer that can be worn multiple ways in case you get too hot/cold & need to adjust.
Layer 3: plaid scarf
It’s practical in keeping me warm. It’s super cute to accessorize with. With it on, it only adds to the outfit. The red matches my jacket perfectly. The tan matches my Uggs perfectly. It’s another warm layer. If I take it off, it doesn’t make or break the outfit. It can be worn multiple ways!
❤️Layer tip: choose a layer that can be taken off without ruining the overall look.
*bonus layer: ear muffs. Earmuffs are just my favorite! They are absolutely adorable but also keep my ears super warm. They match my Uggs perfectly & complete the look for me.
❤️ Layer tip: make it cute, but useful!
I paired my layers with a super similar base: shoulder bag, jeans, Uggs. I brought in all the cold weather accessories. Yes it’s still very much winter where I live 😢 but layering is sooo important for when the weather starts changing from winter to spring. If you are intentional with layering, you can turn your boring basic outfit into a completed look that keeps you warm, is functional, & still super cute! the base outfit on its own is super cute but the layers add so much to the outfit! I wore this to grab coffee with a friend. Would you wear this?

Layering is truly an art form when dressing for unpredictable weather, and having a versatile wool coat like this red merino jacket really makes the process enjoyable. From personal experience, choosing layers that not only keep you warm but also complement each other in color and texture can elevate your whole outfit. One thing I always do is start with a snug turtleneck as my base because it covers so much and sets a warm foundation. I also love how a lightweight wool jacket provides warmth without bulk, allowing freedom of movement and making it easy to adjust when moving indoors or outdoors. Adding a plaid scarf is a game-changer—not only does it add extra warmth around the neck, but it also offers a chance to introduce pattern and style contrast. Scarves that can be worn multiple ways let you customize your look throughout the day as temperatures fluctuate. Bonus accessories like earmuffs aren’t just about utility but also finishing touches that tie the look together. The great part is layering items can be selectively removed, keeping your look intact and stylish no matter how the weather shifts. I find pairing this kind of layered look with classic denim, a shoulder bag, and comfortable boots like Uggs balances practicality and fashion. This way, you’re prepared for those chillier coffee runs or walks, but you remain effortlessly chic. For anyone struggling with transitioning wardrobes through seasons, investing in key pieces such as a merino wool coat and layering basics can transform your stylistic approach. It turns simple outfits into thoughtful ensembles that work with the weather, ensuring you stay cozy, functional, and cute all day long.
