tips to style outfits for a long torso
I’m 5’5 and most of that is in my torso 🙃 most people don’t believe me & I think it’s because of how I dress! it’s been something I’ve had an insecurity about for most of my life but learning how to style it has made it a lot easier. I think it’s one of the hardest body proportions to style. For me, it’s about creating the illusion that my legs are longer rather than trying to hide or shorten my torso.
💞tip: high waisted bottoms
I know low waist is trending right now. Wear what you like! But for me, it’ll always be a high waist. A higher waist on the bottom creates the illusion that your waist (& legs) start higher up making them look longer. It also cuts your torso in half.
💞tip: crop top
Pairing a crop top with high waisted bottoms helps with creating the illusion that your torso actually ends where the top ends and the bottoms begin, making your legs appear longer.
This outfit features both of those things! Another struggle I have is most high waisted bottoms aren’t actually high in me. They are usually mid rise. The Levis ribcage are my favorite for when I want a true high waist or am planning on wearing a crop top. Do you have a long torso? Having a long torso can definitely pose some styling challenges, but once you understand how to visually balance your proportions, dressing becomes much more enjoyable. From my experience, one of the most important elements is choosing bottoms that sit higher on the waist. As mentioned, high-waisted bottoms work wonders because they shift the waistline up, instantly making the legs appear longer and more defined. When shopping for jeans or pants, it's key to look for terms like "high-rise" or "extra high rise" since these are designed to sit well above the natural waist. This can sometimes be tricky because many jeans labeled 'high-waisted' actually fit mid-rise on longer torsos. Pairing these bottoms with crop tops is another game changer. Crop tops visually end where the torso ends, creating a neat separation that avoids elongating the torso further. When cropped tops are used in combination with high-waisted bottoms, it elegantly shortens the torso visually, balancing your silhouette. I find that graphic or fitted crop tops often work best, as looser cuts can sometimes hide these benefits. Additionally, consider your shoe choices—opt for open or pointed shoes to complement long legs and add an extra lengthening effect. Standing tall with good posture also helps improve the overall look. Lastly, layering strategically can enhance your styling. Try lightweight jackets or cardigans that end just at the waist or slightly above. Avoid overly long coats that can make your torso look even longer. By incorporating these styling tips, you can confidently embrace your long torso and showcase your unique body shape in the most flattering way. Remember, the goal is to highlight your assets, create an illusion of longer legs, and feel great in your outfit choices.
