Mental Help First Aid

I had to make another post about the Finch app simply because it’s just THAT good. This week has been an emotional roller coaster for me after I was contacted by my abusive ex. This obviously sent me into a downwards spiral for a multitude of reasons, but one thing that was able to help me calm down was the numerous resources Finch offers when you are “in crisis”.

Every time you open the app, it asks you how you’re feeling about tackling that day or just in general. Based on the icon/pic you choose to represent your feelings, the app will provide you with additional resources (exercises, journaling prompts, etc). I was feeling r e a l l y bad today. The app recognized that I was in crisis and immediately showed me these resources.

I chose the “Deep Dive: Managing Your Triggers” and it prompted me with these questions:

• what is one trigger you want to work on?

• what stimuli is associated with this trigger?

• what automatic responses do you have to this trigger?

What do you do when you’re in crisis? Drop your tips in the comments section 💛

... Read moreLife often throws unexpected curveballs, and sometimes, those curveballs hit us emotionally when we least expect it. That's when having an 'emotional first aid kit' becomes absolutely essential. Just like you'd have bandages for a scrape, emotional first aid provides tools and strategies to manage immediate distress, soothe difficult feelings, and prevent a downward spiral. For me, that vital kit has been largely powered by the Finch app, especially during challenging times. Recently, I faced a situation that brought up a lot of old, painful memories. It sent me into a tailspin, and I knew I needed to act quickly to prevent it from consuming me. That's when I turned to Finch. The app isn't just about daily self-care; it truly shines when you're in crisis, offering a range of powerful 'First Aid' resources designed for moments of intense emotional need. It’s like a compassionate friend, guiding you through the storm. One of the first things I appreciate is the app's ability to recognize when you're struggling. When I indicated I was feeling really bad, it immediately presented me with tailored 'First Aid' options. I've found immense value in exploring specific features like 'Deep Dive: Managing Your Triggers'. This particular tool prompted me with questions that really made me think: 'What is one trigger you want to work on?', 'What stimuli is associated with this trigger?', and 'What automatic responses do you have to this trigger?'. These questions helped me gain clarity and start to unpack complex feelings in a structured way, rather than feeling overwhelmed. Beyond trigger management, the Finch app offers a wide array of resources that truly form a comprehensive emotional first aid kit. For immediate relief, I often turn to 'Anxiety Breathing' or the '3-3-3 Rule'—simple yet effective techniques to ground myself when my heart is racing. When I need to process what I'm feeling, 'Name Your Emotion' and the 'Rant Zone' provide a safe space to acknowledge and release those intense feelings without judgment. And for those deeper, more persistent emotional challenges, I've found 'Processing Grief' and 'Deep Dive: What would you say to a loved one?' incredibly insightful, helping me navigate complex emotions like loss or difficult relationships. Sometimes, just a simple sensory exercise like 'Rainbow Grounding' or the '5 to 1 Technique' can bring me back to the present moment. Having these tools readily available on my phone has been a game-changer. It means I don't have to scramble for help or feel lost when emotions hit hard. My experience has shown me that building your own emotional first aid kit, whether digital or physical, is a proactive step towards better mental well-being. It’s about empowering yourself with resources to navigate life's inevitable ups and downs with resilience and self-compassion. I highly recommend exploring what resources resonate with you and building your own kit today.
