MOM FAIL. I feel so bad.

🏥 - Earlier today I was unpacking from our few day trip that we had. My 3 girls were on the floor playing of course as they always do. I put the rest of the clothes away that I was working on and closed the closet door. Soon after closing the closet door I hear my 7 month old start crying. Mom instinct immediately told me to look at the door and sure enough her finger was stuck in between the door. I quickly opened the door and picked her up.

🏥 - The overwhelming feeling of mom guilt literally flooded my body. As she was crying I felt like crying. Her poor finger. I tried to remain calm while still absolutely freaking out in my head. She didn’t cry for as long as I thought she would be I immediately packed her up and took her to the urgent care. She still had a finger so I was happy about that lol.

🏥 - By time we got to urgent care which is luckily only about 5 minutes from us she had stopped crying. I still felt so bad. Just looking at her knowing I shut her finger in the door: as I walked in an explained to every single worker that took care of us about my “mom fail” and how bad I felt. Not to mention the million texts to my husband about how sorry I felt that I did that. The response I got from all of them was actually surprisingly comforting.

🏥 - The response I kept getting was “I know I know you feel bad, but we ALL have accidentally hurt our kids one way or another. It happens! Don’t beat yourself up. You can’t be perfect!”. This response got me thinking so much. About how one fail makes us moms feel like that’s all we are. We discredit all of the times we’ve saved them from danger or getting hurt. We discredit all of the “boo boo’s” we’ve healed by just our kisses. We discredit all the tears we’ve stopped by just a comforting hug and back rub.

🏥 - It honestly made me sad that I was experiencing such guilt. Of course I will feel bad that I accidentally shut my daughter’s finger in the door. But I felt like the WORST mama for it. It just brought to my attention that I am probably not the only one who has felt this way as a mom before.

🏥 - My goal on all my platforms is to be transparent. That includes and good and the bad. If you’re reading this and you’re experiencing or have experienced something similar I want you to know accidents happen. Don’t throw a label on yourself as soon as something goes wrong. We are not perfect and will never be. As moms we hold ourselves to such high standards and when we “fail” or don’t meet them we get so down on ourselves. When in reality this is probably the one mistake you’ve made out of 1000 things you’ve done right. Not to mention when kids get hurt they usually bounce back so fast. My daughter stopped crying before we even got in the car to go to urgent care.

🏥 - You are a good mama. Your kids love you so much. You will be able to heal from this. Your kids forgive you, so you should forgive you. And stop labeling it as a fail! It was an accident. Treat it as such. I see you. I hear you. You’re validated. And you are THE BEST mom.

... Read moreMom guilt is a common experience for many parents, especially when accidents occur involving their children. Whether it's a small incident like a finger getting caught in a door or a larger concern, it's crucial to remember that every parent has moments of doubt and embarrassment. Such experiences can spark deep feelings of inadequacy, but it's essential to shift the focus from the mishaps back to the love and care that you provide daily. Parenting is about learning and growing together with your children. Embracing vulnerability and sharing these experiences can foster connections with others facing similar challenges. Many mothers find solace in communities where they can talk about their struggles, reminding each other that perfection is unattainable. So the next time you find yourself labeling a moment as a “mom fail,” take a step back and remember all the instances where you've been a source of comfort and strength for your kids. Your ability to bounce back from minor accidents and the love you show your children truly define your journey as a mom. It’s important to also recognize the resilience of children—most recover quickly and cherish their parents' affection and support.
