Sourdough Day 4

My sourdough starter is officially a teenager. ÂŽg

Day 4 and it's already producing hooch (the

"liquid gold" of hunger). It's smelling a little funky and acting a little dramatic, but we're pushing through the awkward phase.

If your starter looks like it's hosting a tiny pool party, it's just time to feed it!

At this point, the starter often produces hooch, a liquid layer on top, which can look alarming but is actually a natural sign of hunger and activity. Rather than worrying, this is the perfect time to feed it again and show your starter some love. One thing I found helpful was maintaining a consistent feeding schedule and using room temperature water for mixing the flour. This seems to balance the microbial activity and reduce overly funky odors. Also, stir the starter gently before each feeding to redistribute the yeast and bacteria evenly. I recall when my starter appeared to be hosting its own 'tiny pool party,' much like yours – this is a fun way to think about it, but it’s really a sign you’re on the right track. You can scoop off the hooch if it’s too much, or stir it back in for a stronger tang. The smell, while sometimes pungent and dramatic, tends to mellow after a proper feed. Keep in mind, patience is key during this awkward phase. It’s like raising a teenager—temperamental but full of potential. The more you feed and care for your starter, the better it will perform in your bread making. Soon enough, you’ll notice it bubbling up with energy, ready to leaven your dough. In my experience, using hashtags like #sourdoughjourney and #startergrowth on social media communities provided helpful tips and encouragement from fellow home bakers. Sharing your updates can invite support and ideas to overcome common hurdles in starter care. Don’t be discouraged by the funk or hooch; they’re all part of your starter’s personality developing. Embrace this unique journey, and soon your sourdough will reward you with delicious, tangy bread full of character.
