Postpartum Heart Failure

February is Heart Month ❤️

After having my baby, I was told I was fine many times.

But I had a blood clot, pulmonary edema, and undiagnosed heart failure. I was struggling to breathe and separated from my newborn during Covid, wondering if I was about to die.

By the grace of God, my heart recovered.

I’m sharing this because postpartum heart conditions are often missed, minimized, or mistaken for “normal recovery.”

If something feels off, trust your body. Get a second opinion. Advocate for your life.

One story can save another heart.

In my own journey, I initially thought the fatigue and shortness of breath I felt were just typical postpartum recovery signs. However, these warning signs were actually indicators of serious heart issues that needed immediate attention. Blood clots and pulmonary edema, as mentioned in the survivor’s story, are critical complications that can be life-threatening. I found that being closely monitored by a cardiologist specialized in postpartum care made all the difference in my recovery. February being Heart Month is a great reminder to check in on heart health, especially if you have recently given birth. If you feel something isn’t right after delivery—whether it’s unusual swelling, difficulty breathing, or chest discomfort—don't hesitate to advocate for yourself. Often, these symptoms are misunderstood as normal after childbirth, which delays crucial treatment. Seeking a second opinion or asking for specific tests like echocardiograms or blood work can help diagnose postpartum cardiomyopathy or other heart conditions early. Additionally, the emotional toll of being separated from your newborn during hospital stays or pandemics like COVID-19 can add stress that impacts your physical health. Support groups and survivor stories provide not only valuable information but also comfort by showing that recovery is possible. Sharing experiences under hashtags like #HeartFailureAwareness and #SurvivorStory can empower other mothers to recognize the signs and speak up. Ultimately, trusting your body and persistence with healthcare providers are key. Postpartum heart failure is often missed but being informed and proactive can truly save lives and hearts during this critical period.
