Homemade sandwich bread recipe
Nothing beats the smell of fresh homemade bread! 🍞✨
I’ve been on a baking kick lately and it is my new hobby , and this homemade sandwich bread may be one of my favorite things I’ve made so far. Soft, fluffy, and perfect for sandwiches, toast, grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly, or just eating warm with butter.
🥖 Homemade Sandwich Bread Recipe (Makes 2 Loaves)
• 4½ cups all-purpose flour
• 2¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet) -I used instant because it’s what I had
• 1½ cups warm water
• 2 tbsp sugar
• 2 tbsp butter, softened
• 1½ tsp salt
Directions:
1. Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
2. Add butter, salt, and flour. Mix until a dough forms.
3. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled.
5. Divide dough in half and shape into 2 loaves.
6. Place into greased loaf pans, cover, and let rise 30-45 minutes.
7. Bake at 350°F for 28-32 minutes or until golden brown.
8. Brush with butter if desired and cool before slicing.
The best part? These loaves became the base for the most amazing deli-style sandwiches the next day. Homemade bread really takes a simple sandwich to another level!

Baking your own sandwich bread at home is incredibly rewarding and surprisingly straightforward. Using basic pantry staples like all-purpose flour, yeast, sugar, butter, and salt, you can create soft, fluffy loaves that surpass store-bought varieties in freshness and taste. A key tip I’ve learned is letting the yeast mixture become nice and foamy before adding the other ingredients. This ensures active fermentation, which results in a well-risen dough with great texture. Kneading is also crucial—spending about 8-10 minutes working the dough until it feels smooth and elastic helps develop the gluten structure necessary for that perfect chew. I like to use instant yeast as it’s convenient, but active dry yeast works just as well—just make sure your water is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast. After shaping and placing the dough in loaf pans, giving it a second rise is important for volume and lightness. You’ll notice how the dough doubles in size, almost bursting with air bubbles that translate into softness in the final loaf. Once baked, brushing the top with melted butter adds a beautiful golden color and softens the crust slightly—making it irresistible when sliced warm. The versatility of homemade sandwich bread is one of its best features. From classic PB&J to gourmet deli sandwiches or simple warm buttered toast, it elevates every meal. Plus, the aroma of freshly baked bread filling your home is a comforting reward in itself. For anyone hesitant about baking bread, this recipe is a perfect starting point on a baking journey. It’s simple, dependable, and yields delicious results that motivate you to keep exploring new techniques and recipes. Baking bread from scratch is not only cost-effective but also a fun, creative experience that brings joy to the kitchen and dining table alike.
