Savory beef and broccoli

🥩🥦 Savory Beef & Broccoli 🥦🥩

We LOVE beef and broccoli, but we’ve always found that so many homemade versions come out way too sweet for us. My husband had an idea to try making it with McCormick beef stew mix and thus our own savory beef and broccoli was born —and honestly… it came out AMAZING! 🤤

This is definitely one that’s making its way into my professional family recipe book. 😂📖❤️

🥩 Ingredients

• Sirloin steak, cut into bite-sized pieces

• ½ onion, thinly sliced

• Broccoli, cooked according to package directions

• Oil, for cooking

• Seasoned salt

• Paprika

• Onion powder

• Garlic powder

• Cayenne pepper

• 1 packet beef stew seasoning

• 3 cups water

• ½ cup soy sauce

• White rice, for serving

Seasonings are all measured with your heart! ❤️ But DO make sure you season your steak really well before cooking—it makes such a difference!

🍳 Directions

1. Cook your broccoli according to the package directions. Use as much or as little broccoli as you want, then set it aside.

2. Cut your sirloin steak into bite-sized pieces and slice ½ an onion.

3. Season the steak and onions with seasoned salt, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.

4. Add some oil to a pot and cook the steak and onions until the onions are soft and the steak is completely cooked through.

5. Add 1 packet of beef stew seasoning + 3 cups of water. Stir until everything is well combined.

6. Add ½ cup of soy sauce and mix everything together.

7. Add your cooked broccoli and let everything simmer for about 5 minutes.

8. Serve over fluffy white rice and ENJOY! 🍚🥢

Note: this is a thinner sauce but you might be able to thicken it with a slurry mix (equal parts cornstarch and cold water mixed to gather and give it 5 minutes to thicken once stirred in)

✨ Our savory twist: No brown sugar, no sweet sauce—just a rich, savory beef and broccoli with tons of flavor. If you’re like us and prefer your beef and broccoli on the savory side, you HAVE to try this!

This one was SO good. Definitely a recipe I’ll be making again! 🥹❤️

... Read moreIf you're looking to elevate your homemade beef and broccoli dish, here’s a personal tip that helped me perfect the flavor and texture without making it overly sweet. Using McCormick beef stew seasoning not only adds depth but also brings a hearty, savory base that complements the natural flavors of the sirloin steak and broccoli. I highly recommend seasoning your steak generously before cooking to enhance the taste — it really makes a difference in every bite. For the broccoli, steaming it just enough to maintain some crispness is key; overcooked broccoli can feel mushy and less appealing. I usually follow the package directions but carefully time the cooking so the broccoli stays vibrant and crunchy. When adding the broccoli back into the sauce, a quick simmer helps absorb flavors without losing the texture. To thicken the thinner sauce offered by this recipe, I personally use a slurry made with cornstarch and cold water. Adding the slurry gradually while simmering results in a lovely velvety texture that clings to both the beef and broccoli. It’s a small step but transforms the dish into a restaurant-quality meal. Serving this with fluffy white rice is classic, yet you could also experiment with brown rice or cauliflower rice for a healthier option. This recipe’s straightforward steps and versatile seasoning blend make it perfect for anyone wanting to prepare a quick, savory weeknight dinner that doesn’t rely on sweet sauces. If you’re a fan of savory recipes and appreciate skipping the sugary versions of beef and broccoli, this method is definitely worth trying. It’s an easy way to impress family or guests with a rich, flavorful dish that feels homemade and nourishing. Plus, it gives you the flexibility to tweak seasonings according to your taste preferences, from adding more cayenne for heat to extra garlic powder for depth. Overall, this savory beef and broccoli recipe is a keeper in my family’s recipe collection — delicious, simple, and packed with umami goodness that satisfies the craving for something savory and comforting.
