Today, the Vasvari family experienced our very first NASCAR race at Pocono Raceway in PA, and it was an absolute blast! Living locally, we decided not to tailgate this time, but seeing everyone enjoying themselves made us eager to join in next time. The tailgaters were having so much fun, making memories with loved ones, chatting, smiling, and soaking up the race day atmosphere.
Pro tip: The traffic going in was CRAAAZY, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get in and parked before the race. Also, we were in direct sunlight for the entire multi-hour race, so sunblock is a definite must!
One thing we loved was the variety of food and drink options available. Plus, you can bring a small cooler with your own waters or adult beverages, which is such a great perk!
Did you know? NASCAR stands for the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, and it was founded by Bill France Sr. in 1948. The cars can reach speeds of over 200 mph, making for some heart-pounding action. Pocono Raceway, also known as "The Tricky Triangle," is unique with its three turns, each modeled after a different track.
We absolutely loved our day at the races and can’t wait to do it again – with a tailgate party next time for sure!
... Read moreBuilding on our first visit, I wanted to share more specifics that I wish I'd known, especially since so many people are curious about the actual race day experience and what to wear!
Sitting in the grandstands at Pocono Raceway was incredible! The sheer scale of the track is something you truly appreciate from up high. We had an amazing view, seeing the cars whiz by on the straightaways and navigate 'The Tricky Triangle.' From our seats, we could really feel the rumble and see the whole spectacle unfold. My tip for choosing seats would be to consider sun exposure; we were in direct sun, which was intense, so next time I might look for seats with some shade if possible, or definitely double down on the sunblock!
Speaking of sun, let's talk race day fashion! I saw so many amazing and 'cute NASCAR outfits' out there. While comfort is key, especially with all the walking and heat, it's also fun to show your spirit. Think lightweight fabrics – breathable t-shirts, tank tops, or even a cute sundress. I saw a lot of people rocking team merchandise, bright colors, and even some vintage-inspired looks. Don't forget a hat or visor, sunglasses, and comfortable shoes (you'll be doing a lot of walking!). If you're planning on being in the sun like we were, long sleeves made of UPF fabric aren't a bad idea, or at least plenty of sunblock. It's all about looking good while staying cool and protected!
The crowd at Pocono is an experience in itself! The atmosphere was absolutely electric. Everyone was so friendly and excited. You see families, groups of friends, and die-hard fans all coming together. Before the race, it's a huge party, especially with all the tailgaters we saw. There's a real sense of community, with people chatting, laughing, and sharing in the excitement. It's truly a vibrant and welcoming environment, even for first-timers like us. The energy is contagious!
Regarding 'clear raceway' or general policies, it's always a good idea to check Pocono's website for their specific bag policy before you go. Many venues have a clear bag rule these days to speed up entry. We brought our small cooler, which was a huge plus for drinks, but always check size restrictions. Having a clear view of the track from our grandstand seats was fantastic, and there are plenty of spots around the venue to take it all in.
Overall, our first NASCAR experience at Pocono Raceway was unforgettable. These extra tips on seating, what to wear, and what to expect from the crowd really round out the experience. Can't wait for our next race day adventure!
