One of my favorite strategies is accessorizing my scrubs. It might sound simple, but adding a bit of personal flair like fun pins or colorful lanyards helps me feel put together and confident, even during long shifts. It’s a small touch that boosts my mood and reminds me to take pride in my work attire.
Meal prepping is another key habit. I love incorporating gluten-free options like Driscoll's berries, chocolate chip muffins, and fresh burrata cheese to make my lunches not only nutritious but enjoyable. Having ready-to-eat, delicious food during breaks is essential when time is tight and gives me a comforting pause from the hectic pace.
When possible, I make it a point to spend time outdoors after long shifts—sometimes just stepping outside to 'touch some grass' is enough to reset my mind and body after being inside for 12 hours. Fresh air and natural light provide a calming effect that is crucial for de-stressing.
Traveling and using PTO days consciously is also important. Those days off are perfect for disconnecting, exploring new places, or simply catching up on rest. Setting a designated rest day each week feels necessary to recharge and avoid burnout.
Lastly, I embrace what I call 'me-set' days, where I focus on self-care rituals such as showering, applying lashes or a tan, and doing anything that helps me feel polished and ready for the week ahead. These intentional moments of self-care reinforce my confidence and mental resilience.
In all, these small but intentional steps help me refill my cup as a nurse working full time. They show that while the job is demanding, prioritizing personal joy and relaxation is doable and impactful.
