Three rules I keep for myself as a reader
1. If I read it on kindle unlimited and didn’t rate it at least 4 ⭐️ then I’m not buying the physical book
- exception: I can buy the physical if it is part of a series that is at least 4⭐️ as a whole. Because obviously I can’t have a gap in a series, that’s just crazy 🤪
2. Make it a point to read at least one chapter a day. Some days are hectic but as soon as you stop picking up the books, you’ll make that a habit
3. Every time I finish a book, I save a little money to go towards book purchases or something book related. So if I rate 5⭐️ I save $5, 4⭐️ save $4 etc. At the end of the month I can choose to keep saving up for a bigger purchase or use it now. But whatever I have is all I can spend. This keeps me from going overboard. Because honestly I don’t have any self control when it comes to books otherwise lol
Do you have any rules for yourself as a reader?
Like many of you, I've found that having a few personal guidelines for my reading life makes a huge difference. It's not about strict limitations, but rather creating habits that enhance my enjoyment, help me discover new stories, and even manage my book budget! It's amazing how a few simple 'reader's rules' can turn an overwhelming TBR pile into an exciting journey. My first rule, similar to what's been shared, revolves around smart book acquisition. I used to buy every book I even mildly enjoyed on Kindle Unlimited, and my shelves quickly became cluttered with books I’d probably never reread. Now, I only commit to a physical copy if it truly blew me away with a 4 or 5-star rating, or if it's an essential part of a beloved series. This simple rule has saved me so much money and helps me curate a collection of books I genuinely cherish. It's about mindful consumption, making sure every book I own has earned its place. Then there's the daily reading habit. Life gets busy, and sometimes a week can go by without cracking open a book. To combat this, I make it a point to read at least one chapter every single day. Even if it's just five minutes before bed or during my morning coffee, that consistent engagement keeps the momentum going. It's less about the quantity and more about nurturing that connection with stories. I've found that audiobooks are fantastic for this too – turning commute time or chores into reading time! It keeps me immersed in characters and plots, preventing those dreaded reading slumps. Finally, the financial aspect of being a book lover is real! I’ve adopted a fantastic budgeting rule: every time I finish a book, I 'save' money based on its star rating – $5 for a 5-star read, $4 for a 4-star, and so on. This money goes into a dedicated 'book fund.' It's incredibly motivating to rate books honestly, knowing it directly impacts my next book purchase. At the end of the month, I can use that accumulated fund for new releases, a special edition, or even bookish merchandise. It’s a brilliant way to indulge guilt-free and ensures I don't overspend. It also makes me appreciate each purchase even more, as if I’ve earned it through my reading efforts. Beyond these, I've added a few more personal rules to keep my reading life fresh and exciting. One is the 'DNF (Did Not Finish) Rule.' If a book isn't grabbing me by 20% or 50 pages, I give myself permission to put it down. Life's too short to force yourself through books you're not enjoying! Another is to consciously diversify my reading. I try to alternate between genres, read authors from different backgrounds, or explore formats I don't usually pick up. This keeps my reading experience vibrant and introduces me to perspectives I might otherwise miss. Having these personal rules helps me stay connected to the joy of reading, making it a sustainable and enriching part of my everyday life.

i have reading for 10 minutes or 10 pages whichever im in the mood for as a habit to track each day in my planner and it helps keep me motivated for sure!
