Flashback to yesteryear with me

In the prehistoric days of my childhood....

My little isopod friends kept me entertained for hours. I'd look under rocks and along the edge of the curb for them. How simple it used to be.

Ode to Roly Poly

old friends pop back up

oh what a pleasant surprise!

has time really gone by ?

poem by me ☺️

Did anyone else do this? What did you call them ?

... Read moreThat little poem I shared about roly polies really got me thinking, and it’s amazing how a tiny creature can unlock a flood of childhood memories! Just seeing one of these 'bus stop bugs' now takes me right back to those carefree days. I spent countless hours exploring, lifting up rocks and examining damp soil, always hoping to find a few of my armored friends. It was such a simple joy, a pure form of entertainment that didn't need screens or complicated toys. What was it about these 'roly poly grounded' little creatures that captivated us so much? For me, it was their unique ability to roll into a perfect, tiny ball when they felt threatened. We called them pill bugs sometimes, too! It felt like discovering a secret world right in my backyard. Finding them huddled under a fallen log or along the curb, just going about their miniature lives, was a moment of true wonder. It was a time when the world felt vast and full of endless discoveries, even in the smallest corners. Sometimes, when life gets overwhelming and my mind is racing, I find myself having these unexpected 'flashbacks of everything I survived' – not just the tough stuff, but also the simple, pure moments like these. It's like my brain reaches back for a grounding memory, something to remind me of inherent resilience and the beauty of quiet observation. Those moments spent with my roly poly friends were a form of meditation before I even knew what that was. They taught me patience and curiosity, and unknowingly, they were my first teachers in appreciating the natural world around me. I remember distinctly finding them near the bus stop each morning, waiting for the school bus. They were my little companions, my 'bus stop bugs,' a tiny bit of nature's magic to start the day. There's something incredibly comforting about those 'grounded roly poly' moments – feeling connected to the earth, observing life at a slower pace. It’s a wonderful reminder that true happiness often lies in the most unassuming places and experiences. These flashbacks aren't just about nostalgia; they're a powerful reminder to slow down and appreciate the present. They make me wonder, why don't we still take the time to look under rocks, or marvel at the tiny wonders beneath our feet? Maybe we should! It’s a small way to reconnect with that inner child, that part of us that found immense joy in a 'bus stop bug' or a 'roly poly grounded' in its earthy home. So, tell me, did you have a special connection with roly polies or 'pill bugs' when you were little? What names did you give them? Did finding them bring you a similar sense of peace or wonder? I'd love to hear your own 'yesteryear' stories and how these simple childhood memories still resonate with you today. Share your thoughts in the comments – let's keep these wonderful memories alive!
