... Read moreMy recent trip to Goldbug Hot Springs in Idaho was nothing short of incredible, and I wanted to share more about what made it such a memorable experience, especially for anyone else planning to visit this natural wonder. While the original post briefly mentioned the hike, I found that knowing a bit more detail beforehand really helped me prepare and enjoy it even more. The hike itself to Goldbug Hot Springs is about 2 miles each way, with an elevation gain of approximately 1,300 feet. It's generally considered a moderate to strenuous hike, particularly the last section which involves some steeper climbs and rocky terrain. I'd strongly recommend wearing sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. I saw some people in regular sneakers, and they looked like they were struggling a bit more than I was. Make sure to bring plenty of water, especially if you're hiking in the warmer months. I packed at least two liters and still wished I had a little more! The trail winds through beautiful forests and offers glimpses of the valley below, setting the stage for the reward at the end. Once you arrive, the magic truly begins. Goldbug Hot Springs isn't just one pool; it's a series of tiered, natural geothermal pools cascading down the mountainside. Each pool has a slightly different temperature, allowing you to find your perfect spot. Some are wonderfully hot, perfect for soaking tired muscles, while others are a bit cooler, offering a refreshing dip. I loved moving between them, enjoying the varying temperatures and the stunning panoramic views of the canyon. There’s something incredibly serene about soaking in warm mineral water surrounded by such pristine wilderness. It's truly a natural spa experience that photos can barely do justice. For anyone planning a visit, I'd say spring or fall are ideal times to go. The weather is generally milder for the hike, and the scenery is breathtaking with changing leaves or fresh greenery. Summer can be quite hot, making the hike more challenging, and winter, while beautiful with snow, can make the trail icy and more difficult to navigate. If you do go in winter, be extra prepared with appropriate gear. Always check the local weather and trail conditions before you head out. Beyond just water and good shoes, I'd suggest packing a swimsuit (of course!), a towel, some snacks to refuel after your hike, and a small first-aid kit just in case. If you plan to stay until sunset (which I highly recommend for the views!), a headlamp or flashlight is essential for the hike back down. Most importantly, remember to practice Leave No Trace principles. Pack out everything you pack in—including all trash, food scraps, and anything else. These magical hot springs are a precious natural resource, and it's up to all of us to keep them clean and beautiful for future visitors. Enjoy your adventure to Goldbug!
