... Read moreAs an indie author, I’ve learned that the presence of conflict in a romance novel isn’t just about creating drama—it’s about crafting a story that truly captivates your readers. Conflict acts as the engine that propels your romance forward, providing tension that makes your characters’ journey compelling and authentic. From my own writing and editing experience, I’ve noticed that understanding your sub-genre is crucial. For example, traditional contemporary romances often thrive on more intense conflicts—whether they be internal struggles or external obstacles—that test the characters’ compatibility and commitment. On the other hand, certain sub-genres like sweet or low-conflict romance cater to readers who prefer gentler plots with fewer dramatic twists. In practical terms, when I work with clients, I encourage them to identify core conflicts early on. These can range from misunderstandings and personal doubts to interference from external circumstances. The key is balance: enough conflict to hook the reader and maintain interest, but not so much that it overwhelms the story’s emotional core or pacing. I also find that weaving conflict into character development deepens the story. When characters confront challenges that shake their beliefs or desires, readers connect with their growth on a personal level. This is especially effective in romance, where emotional stakes are high. Lastly, if you’re an indie author looking for editing support to sharpen conflict elements in your manuscript, consider collaborating with an editor who understands storytelling nuances specific to romance. Expert feedback can illuminate areas where conflict can be intensified or streamlined to enhance reader engagement. Remember, conflict is not just a plot device—it’s the heartbeat of a romance novel that keeps readers turning pages and emotionally invested till the very end.
